Collection DescriptionAdministrative HistoryThe Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities (formerly the Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities) is a federally funded, independent state agency that works with legislators, other agencies, advocacy groups, organizations, and individuals to develop, influence, and support public policy that fosters a positive change in the way education, housing, workplace, careers, and community living opportunities are made available to persons with developmental disabilities. The mission of the GCDD is to promote public policy that creates an integrated community life for persons with developmental disabilities, their families, friends, neighbors, and all who support them by sharing information, coordinating public outreach, and implementing strategic legislative advocacy. The Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities is one of 55 entities of its type in the United States that report to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Administration for Community Living. It is authorized under the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act Amendments of 2000 (P.L. 106-402). Scope and ContentThe Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities Records contains planning documents, reports, presentations, guides, publications, photographs, and audiovisual recordings documenting the agency's public policy initiatives, events, advocacy, and outreach efforts on behalf of persons with developmental disabilities in the state of Georgia between 1989 and 2019.
