Robert J. Bielen Collection on the Peace Corps and Revolution in the Dominican Republic
Collection DescriptionBiographical NoteRobert J. Bielen was born in Garfield, New Jersey. He spent his childhood in northeastern New Jersey, where he attended elementary through high school. After graduating, he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he attended the University of Pennsylvania for his undergraduate degree. Afterwards, he was accepted to the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Following a one-year internship at the New York University School of Medicine, Bielen began to look at ways in which he could move with his wife, Peggy, while fulfilling military obligations set forth by the United States government. His search led him to becoming a staff physician for Peace Corps volunteers. In August 1963, Bielen and his wife arrived in the Dominican Republic to begin this service. During their time there, the country underwent great turmoil, erupting in civil war in April 1965. After his service in the Peace Corps ended later that year, he returned to the United States and completed a residency at Temple University Hospital. For over 50 years, Bielen practiced as an orthopedic surgeon in Long Beach, California.
