Collection DescriptionBiographical NoteJames L. Gillis, Jr. was a member of the Georgia State Senate, serving in 1938 as well as 1945-1946. Gillis was a member of several organizations, including the Georgia Forestry Commission Board, State Association of County Commissioners, Bank of Soperton Board of Directors, the National Association of Conservation Districts Hall of Fame, and the Georgia Bankers Association. He also served as president of the American Turpentine Farmers Association and the Georgia Forestry Commision. Gillis founded the Ohoopee River Soil and Water Conservation District and was the direct supervisor. Gillis died in February 2018 at age 101. Scope and ContentThis collection documents James L. Gillis, Jr.'s activities. It includes his time in the Georgia State Senate and his activities on various forestry and bank boards. Documents include correspondence, awards and recognitions, speeches, newspaper articles, and scrapbooks. It also includes one VHS videocassette of Jim L. Gillis, Jr. being interviewed on the University of Georgia campus in 1998. Organization and ArrangementThe arrangment of the files follows the original owner's organization.
