Abstract: Homer Cooper was a professor of sociology, a veteran of World War II, and an active member of the Democratic Party. His papers document his involvement in the China-Burma-India Veterans Association and University of Georgia governance issues.

Collection Description

Historical Note

Homer Chassell Cooper was born October 28, 1923, in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Homer E. Cooper and Clara Chassell Cooper. He served as a surgical technician in the 95th Field Hospital during World War II in the China-Burma-India Theater. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1949 and in 1951 married Patricia Montgomery Irvin, a fellow Oberlin student. Together they had three children: Alice, Ben and Marian. Cooper earned a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and taught at the University of Montana (Missoula), Dartmouth University, and the University of Pittsburgh before joining the University of Georgia faculty in the Department of Sociology in 1964. He retired in 1988. Cooper was active in the state and local Democratic Party. He served as a Clarke County Commissioner (1973-1975) and in the Georgia Conference of American Association of University Professors. Cooper died November 4, 2014, at the age of 91.

Scope and Content

The Homer Cooper Papers document Cooper's involvement in a number of veterans organizations, notably the China-Burma-India Veterans Association, as well as his engagement with University of Georgia governance issues during the 1970s and 1980s.
