Stan Hannan Rhodesia Unafraid Collection
Collection DescriptionBiographical NoteStan Hannan was born in Livingstone, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) in 1945, and grew up in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). When Ian Smith's government declared independence from Britain in 1965 (the U.D.I. – Unilateral Declaration of Independence), Hannan was in the Police Anti-Terrorist Unit, spending his mandatory national service patrolling the borders of Rhodesia against increasing unrest during the early stages of the Rhodesian Bush War. Upon leaving the service in 1967 Hannan married and entered into various business enterprises, including managing the South African folk rock group Four Jacks and a Jill. In 1974 he underwent a religious conversion to Christianity, and the following year was accepted in the Rhodesian Army Chaplain Corps. It was during this time that Hannan produced "A Chaplain's Story" and "Rhodesia Unafraid." After visiting America in the early 1980s, Stan Hannan and his family made the decision to emigrate to the United States, which they did in 1985, obtaining citizenship in 1991. Scope and ContentThis collection includes A Chaplain's Story and Rhodesia Unafraid, two films produced between 1976 and 1978 by Stan Hannan, an officer in the Rhodesian Army Chaplain Corps. Hannan created A Chaplain's Tale as PR move to improve the image of the army chaplains among the other soldiers. After Hannan's A Chaplain's Story was shown on Rhodesian television in 1976, the Rhodesian Army asked him to produce a follow-up, in color, that could be shown internationally to help garner support for the Rhodesian government's cause in the Rhodesian Bush War (also known as the Zimbabwe War of Liberation or the Second Chimurenga). The resulting twenty-minute film, "Rhodesia Unafraid" was the result of a larger propaganda effort known as Operation Springboard.
