Walter Stovall Papers
Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteWalter L. Stovall, son of George and Martha Stovall, was born in Douglas, Georgia in 1938. Stovall studied journalism at the University of Georgia where he met Charlayne Hunter, one of the first African American students to be accepted to the University of Georgia. On June 8, 1963 Stovall and Hunter married in Cleveland, Ohio. In December 1963, their daughter, Suesan, was born. Stovall and Hunter divorced in 1971. Stovall was a reporter and editor for the Associated Press before publishing two novels, Presidential Emergency (1978) and The Minus Pool (1980). He died May 29, 2018. Scope and ContentThe collection documents chiefly the response of friends, family, and the general public to the marriage of Walter Stovall to Charlayne Hunter in 1963. Ms. Hunter became famous as one of the two African American students to integrate the University of Georgia. Stovall and Hunter met at the University of Georgia as journalism students. The papers include correspondence and printed matter (periodicals and newspaper clippings) directly related to the marriage as well as articles related to more general Civil Rights issues such as the Civil Rights Act, 1964. The papers also contain a small number of letters written by Charlayne Hunter Stovall and Walter Stovall to his parents detailing the birth of their daughter, Susan. Organization and ArrangementThe Stovall family organized the materials first by format: correspondence, newspaper clippings and periodicals. The correspondence was further subdivided by correspondent into letter to Walter and letters to George, Martha, and Lynn (his parents and sister respectively). Finally the correspondence to George, Martha, and Lynn was divided into letters from family, friends, and the general public. This original order has been upheld. The collection is organized into two series: I. Correspondence, II. Printed Materials. Administrative InformationPreferred CitationWalter Stovall Papers, Richard B.
