Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteSaxby Chambliss was born in Warrenton, NC. He attended Louisiana Tech University from 1961-1962 before enrolling in the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1966. He received a JD from the Tennessee College of Law in 1968. Chambliss was elected to represent the 8th Congressional district in 1994, part of the Class of '94 wave of conservative Republicans led by Newt Gingrich. In the House, Chambliss served on the Select Committee on Intelligence, where he participated in investigations of US intelligence service shortfalls leading up to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. In 2002, Chambliss ran for the US Senate, defeating the incumbent, Max Cleland. In the Senate, Chambliss chaired the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee from 2005-2007 and was the ranking member of the Select Committee on Intelligence from 2011-2012. As a Senator, Chambliss was recognized for his bipartisanship, including his leadership of the Gang of 10 and his work on the 2007 Farm Bill and Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (the 2008 "bank bailout"), averting a total collapse of financial markets. In 2014, Chambliss announced that he would not seek reelection. After his retirement he became a partner at DLA Piper. Scope and ContentThis collection documents the activities of Saxby Chambliss, a former U.S. Representative and United States Senator. Materials in the House papers include administrative documents on CODEL trips, speeches, various correspondence, event invitations, and scheduling. Legislative materials include documents on topics such as agriculture, budget, defense, as well as letters of support for bills. It also contains documents kept by staffers Matt Strawn and Monty Philpot. Press files consist of news clippings, media briefs, and press releases. Constituent mail contains letters from constituents on various legislative issues. Organization and ArrangementThis collection is arranged into three series: I. House, II. Senate, and III. Audiovisual. Series I is further arranged into four subseries: A. Administrative, B. Legislative, C. Press, and D. Constituent Correspondence. Subseries B. is further arranged into two subseries of staffer files: i. Matt Strawn and ii. Monty Philpot. Arrangement is alphabetical by subject, with the exception of Constituent Correspondence which is arranged chronologically. Administrative InformationConditions Governing AccessThis collection contains audiovisual materials. Reference copies of the audiovisual recordings are available upon request. Research requests will be filled as soon as possible and will be dependent upon the condition of the recordings. This collection contains digital files. To access these files, please request the folders you would like through the finding aid using your research account. An archivist will be in contact with you to explain how to access the files. Please note that not all file formats are currently supported by the library for research use. Case MailThis collection contains constituent case mail that has been restricted for seventy-five years from the date of creation of the record to safeguard information that identifies private individuals.
