Collection Description

Biographical Note

1930 Georgia Gubernatorial Campaign George H. Carswell and Richard B. Russell, Jr. campaigned for Georgia governor in 1930. Russell won the largest majority in the history of Georgia's gubernatorial history with 99,505 votes to Carswell's 47,157.

Linton Burnside West, Sr. was born in Springvale, Randolph County, Georgia on January 30, 1894. West earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1915 and an LL.B. in 1918, both from the University of Georgia. In 1919, West began practicing law in Cuthbert, Georgia. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War I and mayor of Cuthbert from 1920 to 1924. He also served as member of the Georgia House of Representatives for Randolph County from 1925 to 1926.

West died in January 1988 in Cuthbert, Georgia.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of eight folders containing newspapers and printed materials related to the 1930 gubernatorial campaign between Richard B. Russell and George Carswell. Richard B. Russell's platform and election ballots from the Georgia gubernatorial election of 1930 are also part of the collection. One folder contains an issue of the Albany Herald dated 28 June 1919.
