Collection DescriptionBiographical NoteJulius F. Bishop was born in Athens, Georgia on July 1, 1915 the son of Julius Frederick Bishop and Mattie Lou McLeory. As a native of Athens he graduated from Athens High School and attended the University of Georgia. At the university he played on the baseball team and was a pitcher for the 1934-1936 seasons. In October 1936 he married his highschool sweetheart Dorothy (Dot) Prickett. After graduating from the university Julius got a job at the post office. While working at the post office he happened on an opportunity to purchase a shipment of baby chicks that had been sent COD. This purchase would begin a part time business raising and selling poultry. Julius served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and after the war he returned to the poultry business and went full time his company named the Colonial Poultry Company. The business continued to prosper and eventually became the company known as Bishop's Hatchery and Athens Poultry Inc. During the 1950's Bishop became interested in the banking and real estate business. He served as a member of the board for the National Bank of Athens and later resigned that position when he was elected president of Athens Federal Savings and Loan. In 1962 Julius ran for the office of mayor of Athens and won the election. He served as mayor from 1964 to 1976. During this time he was recognized by the people of the city of Athens for his "effective leadership in building a better Athens". His leadership abilities found Julius being asked to serve on a variety of boards and committees. Included on that list was the Department of Industry and Trade, the Board of Regents for the University System of Georgia, Athens Regional Hospital Authority, the University of Georgia Department of Research, Athens Federal, Athens Tech, and the Young Harris Methodist Church where he and Dot attended church. Dot and Julius had four daughters-Betty, Barbara, Linda, and Miriam who gave them eleven grandchildren. On June 17, 2005 they celebrated their 65th marriage anniversary together. At that time they had eight great grandchildren and three more on the way. Julius Bishop died at his home on July 7, 2008 at the age of 93. Scope and ContentThe Julius Bishop artifact collection consists of memorabilia collected by Bishop as mayor of Athens and as member of the various committees and boards which he served on. The collection consists of a program, a photograph, certificates, resolutions, appointments, and commissions which were presented to Bishop during his years of public service. Organization and ArrangementThe artifacts collection is contained in one box consisting of two folders of memorbilia accompanied by a bigraphical sketch of Bishop and two plaques.
