Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteEllis Arnall Ellis Arnall (1907 to 1992) served in the Georgia House of Representatives, was appointed state attorney general, and served as governor of Georgia from 1943 to 1947. At the end of his term, Arnall returned to his private law practice and served as director of the Office of Price Stabilization in 1952. Michael Bowers Michael Bowers (1942-) served as Attorney General of Georgia from 1981 to 1997 and now practices law with Balch & Bingham in Atlanta, Georgia. Arthur Bolton Arthur K. Bolton (1921 to 1997) served as Attorney General for the State of Georgia from 1965 to 1981. George Busbee George Busbee (1927 to 2004) was a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives from 1957 to 1972 and was Governor of Georgia from 1975 to 1983. Thomas Marshall Thomas Marshall (1920 to 2003) was judge for the Superior Courts of Georgia Southwestern Circuit, the Court of Appeals of Georgia, and the Supreme Courts of Georgia, where he was chief justice from 1986 to 1989. Thomas Murphy Thomas Murphy (1924 to 2007) served several terms in the Georgia House of Representatives starting in 1960. He served as administrative floor leader from 1967 to 1970 and then served as Speaker pro tem from 1970 to 1973. In 1973 he was elected as Speaker in the House of Representatives, a position he maintained until 2002. Richard B. Russell Richard B. Russell Jr. (1897 to 1971) served in public office for fifty years as a state legislator, governor of Georgia from 1931 to 1933, and U.S. senator. Russell served as United States senator from 1933 to 1971. Carl E. Sanders Carl Edward Sanders (1925-) served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1954 to 1956; and in the Georgia Senate from 1956 to 1962. He was governor of Georgia from 1962 to 1967. Sanders still lives in Atlanta and practices law with Troutman Sanders LLP. Herman E. Talmadge Herman E. Talmadge (1913 to 2002) was governor of Georgia in 1947 and then from 1949 to 1955 before joining the United States Senate. Talmadge served as senator from 1955 until 1980. Eugene Talmadge Eugene Talmadge (1884 to 1946), father of Herman Talmadge, was governor of Georgia from 1933 to 1937 and then from 1941 to 1943. S. Ernest Vandiver Samuel Ernest Vandiver (1918 to 2005) was elected lieutenant governor and served under Governor S. Marvin Griffin, Sr. from 1955 to 1959. Vandiver was also governor of Georgia from 1959 to 1963. Scope and ContentThis collection is comprised of eleven 8x10" triptych color portraits in 10 ½ x12 ½" gold frames of University of Georgia School of Law alumni who have played prominent roles in modern Georgia politics.
