David Gambrell U.S. Senate Papers
Collection DescriptionBiographical noteDavid Henry Gambrell was appointed to the Senate by Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter in 1971 to fill the vacancy created by the death of Richard B. Russell, Jr. Prior to this service he was chairman of the Georgia Democratic Party from 1970-1971, president of the State Bar of Georgia from 1967-1968, president of the Atlanta Bar Association from 1965-1966, and a founding partner of Gambrell & Stolz, LLP (now part of Baker Donelson). A moderate Democrat, Gambrell served on the Senate Banking Committee, Aeronautics and Space Committee, and the Select Committee on Small Business. Though most of the office's efforts were devoted to projects that were ongoing at the time of Senator Russell's death, Gambrell was also active in areas of economic and business development. In 1972 he ran for election to the seat in his own right, but was defeated in the Democratic primary by Sam Nunn. Gambrell later sought his party's nomination for governor in 1974, but was defeated in the primary by Lester Maddox and George Busbee (the eventual winner).
