Excluding a brief autobiographical sketch of Smith, the focus of the collection is U. S. Senator Richard B. Russell, Jr. News clippings and mementos such as the announcement and platform for Governor of Georgia in 1930 and ballots for that election document the early years of Russell's career. News clippings begin in 1930 and extend to 1970. There are also programs of events memorializing the Senator after his death, as well as a few items concerning the Richard B. Russell Memorial Library. A copy of Senator Russell's will is included. Smith's record of mailed contributions to Russell's campaign fund is also part of the collection. The collection also contains photographs of various United States government officials (Robert McNamara, Herman Talmadge, Frank Carlson, Robert G. Stephens, Jr.), including former presidents (Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson). Other miscellaneous photographs include images of the Biltmore House in Ashville, North Carolina and a group of high school students from Athens, Georgia visiting Washington, D.C.

Eugene McCarthy served in both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate before making a run for the presidency in 1967. McCarthy ran as a liberal Democrat; he was very opposed to the war in Vietnam, but was defeated by Hubert Humphrey in the primary. The Clarke County (Ga.) McCarthy for President Organization was formed to promote Eugene McCarthy in the 1968 presidential election. Robert Griffith and Phinizy Spalding, two McCarthy campaign workers from Georgia and University of Georgia history professors, donated this collection, which consists of correspondence, speeches, news clippings, political ephemera, and notes reflecting their work and support for McCarthy's presidential campaign.

Reverend Clifford Hodges Brewton served as press aide to Lester Maddox during his terms as governor and lieutenant governor of Georgia. This collection contains materials Brewton compiled in order to write a book (never published) about Governor Maddox. The scope of the collection covers both the gubernatorial (1967-1971) and the lieutenant governor (1971-1975) administrations of Maddox including the campaigns for each office as well as his 1968 bid for the U.S. presidency. The collection includes press releases, speeches, research materials, clippings, magazine articles, photographs, audiocassettes, and ¼-inch audiotapes.

The collection consists of materials collected by Reverend Clifford H. Brewton relating to Lester Maddox's terms as governor (1967-1971) and lieutenant governor (1971-1975), as well as his 1966 gubernatorial and 1968 campaigns. Brewton collected the materials for the purpose of writing a biography of Maddox, although it was never published. Audiovisual materials in the collection supplement the paper materials documenting Maddox's term as governor of Georgia and his subsequent campaigns for president of the United States in 1968 and for lieutenant governor of Georgia in 1970. Included among the four audiocassettes and 22 reels of ¼" audiotape are recordings of several campaign commercials for radio broadcast for both campaigns and speeches delivered for public events and private organizations throughout Georgia in his official capacity of governor.

The Rockefeller Foundation series consists of Rusk's office files while he was president. These files contain correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings, transcripts and press releases. There is correspondence between Rusk and then Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, former President Harry Truman, Henry Kissinger, Rockefeller Foundation Director of Special Studies, and Rockefeller family members Nelson, Laurance, David and John D. Most of the files deal with the foundation's work in the area of foreign relations, as well as Rusk's confirmation hearings when he became Secretary of State.

Dean Rusk Personal Papers, Series IV: General Office Files include correspondence, journal and magazine articles, newspaper clippings, oral histories, reports, press releases, and transcripts of interviews, speeches, and testimonies. Under general correspondence filed alphabetically, Rusk received letters from regular citizens and prominent politicians, giving and asking for opinions on subjects ranging from the Cuban Missile Crisis, John F. Kennedy's assassination, and Vietnam veterans, to the age of nuclear war, the Iran-Contra affair and Desert Storm. The chronological files are parallel to the general correspondence and contain only Rusk's replies to correspondence. There are a number of files related to the General Westmoreland vs. CBS, Inc. case that includes Dean Rusk's and Robert McNamara's depositions. There are also files related to litigation on Agent Orange under Vietnam.

Dean Rusk Personal Papers, Series IX: Audiovisual, contains audio and video recordings documenting the career of Dean Rusk. The audio recordings range from Rusk's 1961 swearing-in as secretary of state to a 1995 memorial service for Rusk held at Davidson College. Many recordings are audio tracks of interviews conducted with Rusk for television, including a 1971 interview with Bill Moyers, a 1971 "Today" interview, appearances on all of the major networks discussing the impending 1972 presidential election, a 1973 interview with Rusk on the death of Lyndon B. Johnson, and a 1974 interview with William F. Buckley. Additional recordings include audio tracks for television programs on which Rusk did not appear but which held interest for him: a 1971 news segment on Nikita Khrushchev, a 1972 interview with Johnson by Walter Cronkite for CBS, a 1972 interview with David Halberstam on "Today," a 1972 interview with Walt and Eugene Rostow conducted by William F. Buckley, and several NBC and ABC specials concerning Vietnam. Other audio recordings include speeches delivered by Rusk including a 1972 address concerning President Richard Nixon's trip to China, Rusk's 1973 eulogy for Johnson, a 1974 graduation address to the 55th class of the Armed Forces Staff College, and a 1983 lecture entitled "The Constitution: Comity or Confrontation." The videotapes in the collection cover a broad range of subjects, but the bulk of the tapes date from 1983 to 1989 and roughly coincide with Rusk's retirement from teaching at the University of Georgia. The videotapes range in date from a copy of a March 1962 profile of Dean Rusk by WBTV-TV in Charlotte , North Carolina to the 1996 dedication of the University of Georgia 's Dean Rusk Hall. Included among the videotapes is a copy of the CBS News coverage of the Cuban Missile Crisis, Rusk's 1984 deposition in the Westmoreland v. CBS libel case, a fourteen-tape unedited interview with Dean Rusk conducted in 1985 by Edwin Newman, a thirty-minute documentary on Rusk produced by the University of Georgia in 1988 called "Conversations with Great Georgians: Dean Rusk," a multi-part series entitled "The United Nations: Issues of Peace and Conflict" that covers the 1989 Report of the Former Ambassadors to the United Nations, a three-part interview with Rusk conducted by Kenneth Harris for a BBC series entitled "The Twentieth Century Remembered," as well as several other television appearances and interviews that reflect back on Rusk's tenure as secretary of state during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations and that touch on the topics of the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam, and the Cold War. Also included in the collection is a silent 16mm home movie from 1945 depicting then Colonel Rusk playing tennis at the palace of the viceroy (now the residence of the President of India) with friends Colonel Currie, Captain Swain, Lieutenant Plager, and other unidentified persons.

Dean Rusk Personal Papers, Series V: Speeches/Publications includes addresses, articles, book reviews, interviews, speeches and speech notes either written or presented by Dean Rusk during his tenure as president of the Rockefeller Foundation, as Secretary of State, and as a faculty member at the University of Georgia School of Law. Of interest to researchers are his speech note files, which include comments from the 1950s on U.S. actions in the Far East and Southeast Asia, the Japanese Peace Treaty, Korea, concepts of Cold War strategy, parliamentary democracy, and U.S. policy toward Europe's non-NATO commitments. In 1981-1982 the British Broadcasting Corporation did a series on the "Twentieth Century Remembered" for which Dean Rusk was interviewed. Other interviews include Rusk's reflections on issues of foreign policy and the future of international relations. The working files of Richard Rusk for As I Saw It, the autobiography/biography he wrote for his father, Dean Rusk, include research materials, drafts, and reviews. There are also files of various articles on foreign relations, policy and international law.

The DeKalb County School Desegregation Case Files document the work of the law firm Weekes & Candler defending the DeKalb County Schools in litigation over school desegregation from 1968 to 1997.
