The collection consists of papers of Charles Smith Hamilton and Sylvester Smith. Papers of Charles Smith Hamilton include a handwritten copy of a letter to President Lincoln, signed by over 100 men, regarding Hamilton's removal from their command; handwritten copy of Battle of Iuka, by Hamilton; and a memoriam pamphlet published at Hamilton's death describing his military career. Papers of Sylvester Smith consists of correspondence, mainly from Smith to his Wife, Mary E. Smith, written from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, regarding camp life, other soldiers, rumors, troop position, money matters, his wife's correspondence, and problems coping with his extended absence. Also included are some Smith family letters, financial records of Sylvester Smith, and the diary of Major James Hart Purdy.

The collection consists of papers of Godfrey Barnsley and the Barnsley family from 1806-1903. The papers consist mainly of correspondence, letter books, and financial records. The correspondence (bulk 1828-1873) and letter books (1837-1873, with gaps) pertain to personal and business matters relating to Barnsley's occupation as a cotton factor and merchant. Correspondents include Barnsley's business partners John Day, William D. Duncan, John R. Gardner, Edmund M. Sager, and James Sager and family members including his wife Julia Scarborough Barnsley, his uncle George Barnsley of Liverpool, and his children. Many of the family letters were written from Woodlands Plantation in Bartow County, Georgia to Barnsley while he attended to business in Savannah (Ga.), Mobile (Ala.), and New Orleans (La.) and discuss family and plantation matters. Some of the correspondence relates to his position with the Port of Savannah as vice consul and interim of the Netherlands and vice consul for the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The collection also contains transcripts of much of the correspondence.

The collection consists of papers of Peninah W. Thomas and the Thomas family of Athens (Ga.) from 1821-1959. The papers include correspondence, bills and receipts, account books, legal documents, and sermons (1890s) written by Robert Toombs DuBose. The bills and receipts (1821-1910) contain several receipts for wages paid by Peninah W. Thomas to freedmen. The account books (1834-1845) contain bank accounts of Stevens Thomas and lists of accounts and purchases. The correspondence includes letters (1838-1870) between Peninah W. Thomas and her daughters Ella (Hull), Batavia (Clinch), and Mary (Saffold). The letters mainly contain news of family or friends and social events, but of particular interest are letters from Batavia living in Connecticut during the Civil War. The letters discuss the fall of Ft. Sumter and northerners' inability to understand southern attitudes. Also included are letters from Thomas Reynolds and John Shannon discussing plantation management, the cotton market, and other details of Thomas' business interests. From 1870-1941 letters are between Jennie Stovall (DuBose) and Robert Toombs DuBose, mostly personal but also containing some information on Georgia land sales, his ministry, and service in the Georgia House of Representatives.

Series 1: College Notebooks is comprised of notebooks with class notes from Psychology, History, French, Economics, German, Georgia History, Ethics, Chemistry, English, Political Science, Greek, and Spanish. Series 2: Maps is comprised mainly of photostats of maps that Walter used as minor aids in the preparation of his doctoral dissertation, The Commerce of Colonial Philadelphia, at Yale University. They are chiefly maps, views, and miscellaneous items concerning Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Philadelphia (particularly street plans and environs), the Carolinas, New England, Virgina, and other regions, with special reference to the local trading area of Philadelphia. Series 3: Clippings contains a book of clippings from the Georgia Alumni Record, and newspaper clippings concerning current events in the 19th century.

The majority of the collection pertains to Lumpkin's Athens (Ga.) law firm, Lumpkin & Burnett and includes mainly correspondence relating to law cases of Lumpkin and his partner Wiley B. Burnett. The collection contains personal correspondence to family and friends, including his brother Joseph H. Lumpkin, and his wife and children. The personal correspondence pertains to his law practice, social life in Athens (Ga.), Lumpkin's interest in national and state politics, and in particular the campaigns of kinsman Hoke Smith. The J.T. Dudley papers (1906-1912) contain correspondence dealing with buying and selling land throughout the South. The papers of Edwin K. Lumpkin, Jr. (1910-1915) consist mainly of correspondence relating to his legal practice. The papers of Lumpkin's law partner, Wiley B. Burnett contain mainly bills and receipts, with a few letters relating to the law firm.
