The collection consists of a logbook of the ship Hercules during a voyage from Plymouth, Massachusetts to Savannah, Georgia from January 11-March 31, 1784. Probably recorded by Captain Hugh Russell, the log's daily entries note the time of day, the course, the direction of the wind, latitude and longitude, and remarks on weather and various sea life encountered.

A four-page manuscript memoranda of James Wilson (1742-1798) and others relating to the Yazoo Land sales. The manuscript includes: 1. Power of attorney from James Wilson to Matthew McAllister and Seaborn Jones, authorizing them to act for him in buying land in Georgia - dated November 20, 1794; 2. Receipt of Matthew McAllister and Seaborn Jones to James Wilson for $25,000; 3. Receipt of Seaborn Jones to Matthew McAllister for $25,000 "in bank bill, which the Honourable James Wilson hath placed in his & my hands ..." - dated November 20, 1794; 4. Record of release by Matthew McAllister "as a grantee," to Colonel Wade Hampton of South Carolina, giving answerable bond [transcribed from the Washington (Georgia) Monitor of September 24, 1803]; 5. Page of memoranda referring to "Pamphlet."

The collection consists of a letter from John Y. Noel, Mayor of Savannah, Georgia, dated November 29, 1796, to the Chief Magistrate of New York City. The letter asks for assistance because of a great fire which broke out on September 26 and provides details as to the extent of the fire and its devastating effect. Also includes a newspaper account of the fire reprinted from the Columbian Museum on November 29, 1796.

The collection consists of a typewritten transcript from the original records of "Index to Book Commission 'B' 1754 to 1806 [i.e. 1827]" and "Commissions. The index refers to the leaf numbers of the original manuscript records; the commissions follow, the copy corresponding to 255 leaves of the manuscript with the original leaf numbers noted. The transcript (40, 162 pp.) was evidently made from the original "Commission Book B" in the office of the Secretary of State, Atlanta (as of 1929). The commissions are not always copied in full, Gwinnett's and some others being somewhat abridged.

The collection consists of a diary of Eugene LeHardy, written at Rome, Georgia, from 1851 to 1853. Written entirely in French, LeHardy details his work surveying a railroad line between Rome, Georgia and Jacksonville, Alabama, probably the Selma, Rome and Dalton Railroad Company. Also includes comments on business affairs, farming and gardening, fruit growing, weather, and an interesting passage on an exhibition of the Etowah Agricultural and Mechanical Association.

Printup and discuss the building of the railroad and other rail and civic business in northwest Georgia and Alabama.

The collection consists of two typewritten reports, "A historical sketch of the evolution of trade and transportation at Augusta, Ga." and "A historical sketch of the evolution of trade and transportation at Macon, Ga.," were presented by E. H. Hinton, chairman, The Southeastern Freight Association, at the meeting of executive officers, 17-18 January 1912, at the Hotel Belleview, Bellair, Florida. The reports chronicle in great depth the development of commercial interests in these two Georgia cities. Each report also contains "A synopsis of the rate adjustment from the East."

The collection consists of one record book, produced by the American Sunday-School Union, in which J. L. Stevens recorded daily details of his missionary work near Charleston, South Carolina from 1869-1870. Daily entries discuss who he visited, where he preached, and includes many references to meeting with African American preachers. Also contains monthly reports listing name of Sunday school, location, number of teachers and students, and name of superintendent; and account current which details expenses incurred, books sold, and donations.

The collection consists of galley proofs of an earlier work by Emma Hamilton Bulloch, author of The Marshes of Georgia and Other Poems (Washington, [D.C.] : W. F. Roberts Company, 1913), titled (in ink) on the first page simply "Poems." One poem, "The Cathedral Woods," does appear in both works -- at the beginning of "Poems" and at the conclusion of The Marshes of Georgia. "Poems" contains numerous manuscript corrections and notations, both printer's marks and textual changes. In the upper right corner of page one of the galley is the stamp of Seaman's Advertising Agency. Seaman's Printing House in Durham, North Carolina, was actively involved in job book work during the immediate pre-World War I period and very possibly was handling the publication of "Poems" for Emma Hamilton Bulloch.

The collection consists of a two-page genealogical table of the Twiggs family (descendants of Thomas Twiggs, died in Virginia circa 1614) was compiled by Alexander Mc C. Duncan about 1910 from records furnished him by Eugenia Washington. It covers the years 1608 to the late eighteenth century listing five generations of descendants. Although not a complete record, it does chronicle much of the early history of this prominent Georgia family. Also included is a note to Duncan from F. F. Screven pertaining to the genealogical table.

This collection includes legal documents related to Letitia Vandexen (sic) Smith, Thomas Smith and Frances Sophia Smith. The Thomas Smith letterbook mainly consists of correspondence between members of the Thomas Smith family from 1767-1841. The earliest letters (1767 and 1784) are from Smith to his mother Elizabeth Lawrence in Aberdeenshire, England. A group of 21 letters between Smith and his cousin Dr. Peter Smith of Aberdeenshire discuss the American lifestyle, medical schools and practices, and the judicial system. Another group of letters to Judge Jasper Yeates and Governor Thomas Mifflin refer to legal decisions and court procedures. Other correspondents include Dr. Philip Physick and Smith's brother Charles of London, England. Also included in the letterbook are two proclamations awarding judgeships to Smith, legal documents pertaining to the settlement of Smith's estate (1816), and documents relating to land sales or mortgaged property (1826 and 1841). Series 2 contains typescripts of letters between Thomas Smith and soon-to-be U.S. President George Washington in 1785-1786, in which Smith was acting as Washington's attorney for some land suits in Philadelphia. The typescripts were made by Burton Alva Konkle in 1902. Finally, Series 3. contains letters between Thomas Smith scholar Burton Alva Konkle and Wymberly Jones De Renne regarding the Thomas Smith collection.

The collection consists of correspondence, military appointments, receipts, orders of Dr. William Duncan relating to his service in the 10th Georgia Infantry Regiment in Virginia (1861-1862) and later as a surgeon in the Savannah area. Of particular interest is a list of medicines and hospital stores received at Thunderbolt Battery, Dr. Duncan's Oath of Pardon, and a request for travel to Europe in 1865. Other items included in the collection are notes and orders signed by T. J. Charlton or George P. Harrison, Jr. and one letter from Michael L. Cass.

The collection consists of a requisition for salt, dated 20 October 1774 and signed by John Newdigate, Stephen Maddox, and Mordecai Sheftall (in frame); three issues of Georgia continental paper money ($4 and $5 Spanish milled and $5 Continental) for 1776 and 1777; late eighteenth century Masonic apron with hand-drawn illustrated cover belonging to Levi Sheftall, member of Solomon's Lodge, Savannah; newspaper account (Beaumont, Texas Journal, 3 March 1942) of three items and other Sheftall memorabilia and a Xerox of a biographical sketch of Cooper Sheftall. The Masonic apron is housed in the vault.
