The collection consists of the papers of the Branch family of Savannah, Georgia from 1830-1961. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence between Charlotte Sawyer Branch and her sons John L., Sanford W., and Hamilton McDevil Branch, who served mainly in the 8th Georgia Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The letters describe the 1st Battle of Bull Run, the death of John, the subsequent capture of Sanford (who had stayed with his dying brother), the Seven Days Battle, the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, and the Battle of Gettysburg, where Sanford was wounded and captured again. Hamilton transferred to the 54th Georgia Infantry Regiment and writes about the regiment's involvement in the Atlanta Campaign, particularly the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. He also writes from Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee while serving with Nathan Bedford Forrest.

Includes case files (typically opinions, briefs, judicial memoranda, reports, administrative forms and correspondence), dockets, bench books, case indexes, correspondence, printed opinions, committee files, charge books and notes, newsclippings, photographs, and maps. Of note are Judge Morgan's files relating to highly publicized cases, such as Wallace Butts v. Curtis Publishing Company, civil rights cases heard in District Court in Georgia and the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits, and materials relating to the split of the Fifth Circuit into the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits in 1981.

The collection consists of correspondence from Robert Toombs to his wife, Julia Ann DuBose Toombs in Washington, Wilkes County, Georgia from 1850-1867. During 1850-1859 his letters come from Washington, D.C. while he served in the U.S. Senate. During the Civil War, he wrote from Virginia (1862) and Atlanta, Georgia (1864). Following the war, letters are written from Paris (1866-67) while he was in exile. The correspondence generally discusses current events; his land holdings in South Georgia, Alabama, and Texas; people; other soldiers; and his wish to be with his wife and family.

This collection also includes material from Dr. Goff's research including preliminary notes for articles, working copies of Georgia county maps, and the incomplete manuscript for "Off to Alabama." Dr. Goff asked Hemperley to complete some of his writings and this collection contains research and notes pertaining to this project. Aslo included are stone fragments, pottery fragments, 18th century nails, Civil War bullets, and a 19th century brass spike. Georgia maps stamped "Dr. John H. Goff Collection" were removed from this collection and added to the county map folders in the Hargrett Library Map Collection.
