The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup C, Series X: Civil Rights relates to many aspects of the civil rights issue. Almost all of the files deal with black-white relations in the United States, particularly those involving legislative action during Senator Russell's career in the Senate. Issues, such as the antilynching bill, the Fair Employment Practices Committee, racial integration, and the various civil rights bills from 1948 until 1964, are documented. There are also records related to other topics such as cloture, the literacy voting bill, the poll tax, school prayer, and some subjects which are indirectly related to the race issue. Any additional non-textual materials originally filed with papers were removed for preservation purposes and improved access. These materials include photographs, audiovisual items, scrapbooks, vertical files, memorabilia, and books.

Series VI. Photographs contains a variety of photographs from Miller's career in politics. The majority were generated during his tenure as Lieutenant Governor and Governor and document events in which he took part, including speaking engagements, state dinners, dedications, awards ceremonies, and conventions.

The collection consists of clippings, printed material, manuscripts, photographs, correspondence, and ephemera documenting a broad range of events, activities, people, and places in the state of Georgia from the earliest American Indian settlements through the early 1980s and, specifically, the history of senators in Georgia through the late 1970s. Drafts and research materials for Josephine Mellichamp's book, Senators from Georgia, provide an abundance of information on the careers of Georgia senators. The drafts of "Georgia Heritage" contained in these papers may be the only extant copies of the manuscript since the material was never published. The collection also contains a small collection of printed works.

The materials document the activities of the De Renne family and contain information on land transactions in Georgia; estate or plantation management, particularly Wormsloe Plantation (Savannah, Ga.) and Popular Grove; the Buena Ventura Stock Company and Buena Ventura Ranch (1883-1884) in Tom Green County (Tex.); book and wine purchases for Wormsloe; and the De Rennes' involvement in the Georgia Historical Society and the Georgia Bicentennial (1933). The collection consists of miscellaneous materials chiefly concerning Andrew A. Lipscomb, Chancellor of the University of Georgia, and his son, Francis Adgate Lipscomb, class of 1866 and later Professor of Belles Lettres. There are eight typescripts of poems by A. A. Lipscomb on various topics. Class notes and literary society speeches of F. A. Lipscomb during his terms at the University are present as well as his complete lecture book for British literature (1872-1873). In addition there is a small group of correspondence between father and son. There is also a small amount of correspondence between Mrs. M. A. Lipscomb and David C. Barrow concerning the establishment of the Crawford W. Long infirmary on the University campus. Also present is a genealogy of the "Descendants of John Hall and Mary Parker of Maryland," compiled by H. M. Chapman of Washington, D. C., in 1898.

The Financial Materials examine the entire fiscal process of the university, from Budget Requests through final audit and financial reports for the fiscal year. Also present on this series are working papers, rough drafts, reports, support documents and related correspondence. These records are substantially complete from the late 1940s through the early 1960s, and reflect best the marked growth of the University and the Comptroller's Office. Also present are copies of bound Proposed Budgets. The Administrative Subject Files include research contracts at the University from 1944-1956; documents on personnel training agreements for World War I; and a wealth of correspondence, including a letter to Eddie Rickenbacker, letters from Sen. Richard Russell and J. Edgar Hoover. The Personnel Materials include the State Security Questionnaires and loyalty oaths from 1954-1959. There is also a subject file and salary information. The Board of Regents material focuses on the Physical Plant aspects of the Comptroller's Office, with special emphasis on the physical properties of the University. Of special interest is the documentation for the period of growth and expansion which took place at the University from the mid 1950s through the early 1960s. There is also a copy of a 1934 inventory of physical holdings of the University. The Athletic Association material includes a complete financial record of the Association from the early 1950s through the early 1960s. The most important portion are the administrative subject file which contains a wealth of correspondence and materials from the 1940s to the 1960s. Two files of material on Sanford Stadium and one file of contracts 1913-60 are also available. The Personal Papers are organized into an alphabetized subject /correspondence file, and includes correspondence with the Bolton family and friends. There are also materials dealing with Mr. Bolton's various affiliations, including Kiwanis, Athens Country Club, Masonic Lodge, and various other professional and social groups.
