Collection includes three journals by Cornelius Herbert Longstreet (1831-1901) documenting his experiences as an acting assistant
paymaster on the U.S. Bark Braziliera, a blockader ship during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Also included is Longstreet's
official letter copy book which covers his correspondence as a paymaster from 1863 to 1866 and a transcribed copy of his journal
entries. Cornelius Herbert Longstreet's journals were transcribed in 1942 by his grandson Rubert James Longstreet (1892-1969)
and compiled into a book titled "Journal of a Civil War Blockader". Rubert J. Longstreet's transcription includes occasional
notes to provide identification or context to the entries.

This collection contains the ships log of Union Army Lieutenant Commander L. Howard Newman from May 10,1863 to April 4, 1865
as he commanded the USS Dawn, USS Pembina, and USS Nyack in both the North and South Atlantic Blockading Squadrons. In it
he discusses the deaths and desertions of crewmembers; movements of ships through the Potomac Flotilla off Port Royal, South
Carolina; a shipwreck; and attacks on Fort Fisher and Fort Anderson on the Cape Fear River.

The collection consists of the diary of a blockade runner during the Civil War from December 1861 through February 1862. The
diary describes the voyage from New York to Halifax, Nova Scotia and the return voyage on the brigantine the Standard of Windsor,
loaded with dry goods, food, and medicine for the Confederate government. The author describes in detail the weather, sea
conditions, eating habits, and life aboard ship; fears of capture by Union forces; maneuvers used to run the blockade; and
off loading the cargo. Also contained in the collection are research notes, speeches, and correspondence of William Porter
Kellam pertaining to his research of the diary. Kellam attributes the diary to James Dickson in Savannah, Georgia.
