Scope and content The Senate Staff Oral History Project documents the professional careers and reflections of individuals who served on the staffs of Georgia's United States Senators from Richard B. Russell, Jr. to the present. Interview participants include members of legislative and committee staffs who worked in Washington D.C. and Georgia. Most interviewees held one or more senior positions including, but not limited to, administrative assistant (or chief of staff), staff director, legal counsel, legislative aide, legislative director, policy analyst, press secretary, regional director, and scheduler. The collection documents the personal experiences and insights of these staff members as they relate to their experience working for U.S. Senators from Georgia, the role of the United States Senate in government, the Senate as a workplace, and memorable campaigns and legislative debates. It also includes assessments of the legacies left by Georgia's U.S. Senators with regard to politics and public policy in Georgia and the United States. The autobiography, a copy of the original manuscript written by Johnson in 1867, covers Johnson's entire political career. Correspondence is mainly from Johnson to his daughter Tallulah Horne and her husband Pearce, with several to his daughter Gertrude discussing primarily family matters.

The collection consists of papers of Wilson Lumpkin from 1828-1869. The papers consist mainly of personal correspondence (1828-1859) from Lumpkin to his wife, Annis Hopkins Lumpkin, and children written from Washington, D.C. while he was serving as a U.S. Representative and Senator and during his involvement with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The collection also includes a "memorandum" notebook (1838-1869) in which Lumpkin recorded a few diary entries, genealogical notes, recollections of his childhood and political career, and lists of slave births. The collection included a broadside, Letter from Ex-Governor Lumpkin (BRO 1860 L4), which has been added to the broadside collection.

The reminiscences mainly highlight his political career including service as a U.S. Representative; Governor of Georgia; United States Bureau of Indian Affairs, Commissioner to execute the Cherokee Treaty of 1835; and U.S. Senator. Besides the personal reminiscences, the volumes include copies of official correspondence as Governor and Commissioner, and speeches and remarks as U.S. Senator. The reminiscences describe state and national political matters and include extensive information regarding the native American Indians, particularly the Cherokees, and their subsequent removal to the West.

The Alexander S. Clay Papers is one of the earliest collections of Congressional papers held by the Russell Library and documents the beginnings of modern, federal policy-making in the twentieth century. The collection consists of correspondence between Senator Clay and his constituents, government officials and public servants, members of his family, and others between 1900 and 1914. Most of the letters are incoming correspondence. Topics discussed in the correspondence include the appointment of postmasters and other civil servants, nominations for students seeking admission to the United States Military Academy (West Point) and Naval Academy (Annapolis), tariffs and international trade legislation, the opening of the Panama Canal, U.S. Supreme Court cases and justice appointments, women's suffrage, Prohibition, Georgia gubernatorial elections, the 1908 presidential election, expansion of rural postal delivery service, relations between the United States and the Philippines, and the 1910 federal census. Also included in the collection are letters received after Clay's death, a photograph, postage stamps, and U.S. Army records from the 31st Regiment of the Georgia Volunteer Infantry (which Clay's son, Frank Butner Clay, served in as a captain) that were collected by the Clay family.
