The collection consists of the papers of Cameron Douglas Flanigen from 1867-1941. The bulk of the materials (1897-1924) document
Flanigen's activities as a member of the Athens Board of Education and pertain to Athens city schools. These materials include
correspondence, financial records, speeches, reports, and writings documenting the conditions of both white and black schools
in Athens, teacher and board member salaries, scores of teacher and principal examinations, educational requirements, and
teacher appointments.
Another substantial portion of the collection (1894-1936) pertains to Flanigen's involvement with the Athens Gas Light Company,
as president of its successors the Athens Electric Railway Company and the Athens Railway and Electric Company, as well as
vice-president of the Georgia Power Company. These materials include correspondence, reports, financial records, and speeches
documenting the problems and development of local transportation systems in Athens. The collection also contains postcards,
indentures, printed materials, and newspaper clippings.
