The wire recordings in this collection document Talmadge's successful campaign against M.E. Thompson for the Georgia governorship in 1948, immediately following the Three Governor's Controversy.

This collection primarily focuses on the research and publication of the book Carl Vinson: Patriarch of the Armed Forces by James F. Cook. Photocopies of research material, notes, correspondence, photographs, and transcripts of interviews make up the majority of the files. There are three albums containing original correspondence between Carl Vinson and Louis Stockstill, journalist for Army-Navy Times, and Neta Stockstill, secretary for the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, dating from 1962 to 1976. Also, there are a few of Cook's early writings and a small amount of material related to his book Governors of Georgia, 1754-2004.

Gillis served as the Director of the State Highway Board for much of the 1950s and 1960s, helping to create the state's modern road system. He was also the manager of Ernest Vandiver's successful 1958 gubernatorial campaign, the chairman of the State Democratic Executive Committee in 1939-1941, and a major figure in the early history of Treutlen County. The collection is of interest to those studying highways and Georgia politics, especially in the late 1930s and during the Herman Talmadge administration (1948-1955), as well as the Vandiver campaign and disputes over highway construction in the late 1960s.

Hal Henderson is a retired professor of political science from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) in Tifton, Ga. His main research field is mid-twentieth century Georgia politics. The oral history interviews in this collection are the result of research Henderson conducted for two books, one on Ellis Arnall and the other on Ernest Vandiver. This collection also contains eight VHS recordings from a symposium on Georgia governors directed by Hal Henderson and Gary Roberts that was held at ABAC in 1985.

John Harold Hawkins was born May 22, 1892, in Forsyth County, Georgia, the son of Perry C. Hawkins and Della Bramblett Hawkins. He was admitted to the Bar in 1916 and served as official court reporter of the Blue Ridge Circuit. Hawkins was nominated Associate Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court in the Democratic primary held September 8, 1948. The papers of Judge Hawkins include correspondence and printed materials related to his 1948 campaign, a small number of administrative and case files maintained by legal assistant Harold Glore, personal correspondence, clippings and photographs.

The Jack J. Spalding (Spalding's father) series includes correspondence (1933-1938), canceled checks, legal documents, and business papers (1870-1938) pertaining to Jack J. Spalding's legal career and the law firm of King and Spalding in Atlanta, Georgia. The Jack J. Spalding, Jr. (Spalding's brother) series includes correspondence (1943-1951) from Jack Jr. to Hughes Spalding, first from New York City, then Greenville, South Carolina, and typed carbon copies of Hughes' response. The letters primarily discuss family matters and personal interests. The series also contains financial materials and legal documents pertaining to the estate of Jack Jr.
