The collection consists of two commonplace books (undated) belonging to Marion Heard. The books contain handwritten words to many popular songs of the day and some very obscure and perhaps locally written songs. An index is located in the back of the first volume listing such titles of "Carolina & Georgia Boys," "Green Old Hills," and "Sailor Boys Carol."

The collection consists of an autograph manuscript copy of Dan Emmett's song "Dixie land," which was written on 22 February 1899 at Conshocton, Ohio. The recto comprises voice and chorus for the minstrel arrangement while the verso lists the lyrics for five stanzas. This copy has words only; there is no musical notation. (21 1/2 X 26 1/2 cm.) Accompanying the sheet is the quill pen used to make the copy. In addition, the collection contains clippings, off-prints, brochures, and photocopies of other materials relating to Emmett and his famous work. There is also an early recording of "Dixie" by Mabel Garrison and the Victor Male Quartet for Victoria Records.
