The letters were written from the Marine training camp at Paris Island (S.C.), then from France, Belgium, Luxemburg, and Germany during his military service. The letters mainly discuss family and friends in Georgia, but also contain information on Dowling's duties as a runner carrying messages between units, trench warfare, being gassed, the people's reactions to American soldiers, and the battle of Saint-Mihiel (France) in 1918.

Letters include descriptions of the area, the people, camp life, and typhoons; and regard Japanese prisoners of war and independence of the Philippines.
