The collection consists of one Article of Apprenticeship of the Atlanta Intelligencer Book and Job Office. Dated Georgia, Fulton County, September 16, 1868, J. L. Peterson has applied to have Judy Smith, a 10-year-old orphaned African-American girl "bound and apprenticed." The terms of the apprentiship include that Smith may not leave service or consent to marry until the end of her term at age 18 without permission. Peterson agrees to clothe, feed, and maintain Smith including medical attention, teaching her to read, and teaching her housekeeping and sewing.

The collection consists of three ledgers kept by Henry Hicks from 1852-1873. Hick's first ledger contains lecture notes from courses taken at the Medical College of Georgia, from lectures given by Drs. Louis A. Dugas, Paul F. Eve, and Robert S. Newton. The remainder of the ledger, and the remaining two ledgers, contains patient accounts, listing name of patient, services provided, charges and medicine dispensed. Ledgers also list the mileage Hicks charged as he traveled to visit his patients. Loose papers include a Freedmen list, an IOU, and a list of accounts. These accounts appear to be from an estate sale on December 28, 1843 and list household goods, livestock and names of people who were enslaved.

This collection contains the papers of the McDowell, Talmadge, Lipscomb, and Rutherford families including correspondence, ledgers, Civil War documents, and a will related to the McDowell family and Clovis Talmadge; the diary of a Union soldier; clippings; and photographs related to the Lipscomb and Rutherford families. The bulk of the collection is comprised of the correspondence of Georgia McDowell Talmadge and her husband Clovis Talmadge during and immediately following the Civil War. Transcriptions of the almost all of the correspondence and the will are included.
