The collection consists of materials relating to enslaved people and slavery in Georgia. The materials include estate appraisals for the estate of Brittain Smith (1802) and Valentine Hatcher (1812); an inventory of the estate of Valentine Hatcher (1812); and a property list of the estate of Brittain Smith (1802); a bill from Lusk, Lathrop, and Co. documenting items purchased for slaves' use (1834); and a letter (1856) from Linton Stephens in Sparta (Ga.). The appraisals and property list give the enslaved peoples' name and value. The letter (16 Dec. 1856) lists enslaved people Linton has for sale including their price, name, and age and discusses the health of several slaves.

Additional entries contain itemized accounts of expenses for food, clothing, nursing, and selling the enslaved people.

The collection consists of papers of Wilson Lumpkin from 1828-1869. The papers consist mainly of personal correspondence (1828-1859) from Lumpkin to his wife, Annis Hopkins Lumpkin, and children written from Washington, D.C. while he was serving as a U.S. Representative and Senator and during his involvement with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The collection also includes a "memorandum" notebook (1838-1869) in which Lumpkin recorded a few diary entries, genealogical notes, recollections of his childhood and political career, and lists of slave births. The collection included a broadside, Letter from Ex-Governor Lumpkin (BRO 1860 L4), which has been added to the broadside collection.

Thomas Jones' papers include lists of taxable property (slaves, land, livestock, and equipment); indentures; and receipts for the purchase of slaves (names of enslaved people include Adam, a carpenter, Charles, Randal, John, Betsy, Nancy, Abram, Ann, Eliza, Sam, Ned, Bob, Lucy, Cherry, Nelson, Charlott, Robert, Lindy, and Mary). Letters are from Henry Francis Jones to his sister, and between Edwin T. Davis and Mattie Davis; and regard battles, military strategy, and military life. Papers of E.T. Davis concern Davis's military services, and include diary entries with regard to his service with the Dixie Boys of Company A, 57th Georgia Infantry Regiment. The collection also includes plats, indentures, and writs regarding land in Georgia, mainly Irwin and Thomas counties, and a portrait of Thomas Jones.

This collection contains land grants, legal papers, farm records, photographs, correspondence, and artifacts documenting the history of the farm on which the Shields and Ethridge families ran from Colonial settlement through the 20th Century. Included are plats of the farm as it grew, photographs of daily operations, business receipts reflecting the changing times, and a variety of manuals and catalogs of farm implements as the farm became more mechanized. There are many identified photographs, mainly from the 1920s, recording family trips, farm operations, and portraits.

The bulk of the collection is comprised of the correspondence of Georgia McDowell Talmadge and her husband Clovis Talmadge during and immediately following the Civil War. The collection consists of the papers of William Harden and the Harden family of Savannah, Georgia from 1826-1936. The papers include correspondence, legal documents, genealogical materials, clippings, as well as speeches and writings of William Harden. The bulk of the collection (1844-1936) consists of correspondence to William Harden or Judge Edward J. Harden. Letters to William Harden pertain to Georgia history and family genealogy as well as letters documenting Harden's duties as Secretary of the Sons of the Revolution (Savannah, Ga.) and as Librarian for the Georgia Historical Society (Savannah, Ga.). Correspondence to Judge Edward Jenkins Harden discusses Georgia politics and law cases. Notable correspondents include Joseph Henry Lumpkin, Charles Colcock Jones, Jr., and Caroline Miller. Also includes correspondence of other family members including John Maxwell Harden, Edward T. Harden, and Ann Harden Morse. Of particular interest, are a series of letters (1826-1857, with gaps) from George Michael Troup to Dr. W.C. Daniels of Savannah (Ga.). Writing from Milledgeville (Ga.) and Washington (D.C.), Troup's letters discuss Georgia and U.S. politics, state rights, Georgia land surveys, public education, tariffs, the nullification issue, and Indian affairs.
