The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup C, Series XVII: Raesly File consists of miscellaneous items acquired, used,
and maintained by Ms. Raesly during her tenure as personal secretary. Included are three secretarial notebooks, two of which
were used by Raesly; the third was used by Jane McMullan as assistant personal secretary in the mid 1960s. The notebooks contain
subject paragraphs dictated by Russell or approved staff for composing letters of reply. Other items include correspondence,
press releases, memoranda, and dictation copies, which were maintained by Raesly for safe-keeping and ready reference.Any
additional non-textual materials originally filed with papers were removed for preservation purposes and improved access.
These materials include photographs, audiovisual items, scrapbooks, vertical files, memorabilia, and books.

The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup C, Series XVIII. Exhibit B, under the terms of the original conveyance of
the Russell Collection, was not to be made available until May 8, 1973. The primary intent of the executors was to avoid injuring
or embarrassing any living person by the the dissemination of information contained in these documents. Exhibit B is currently
available to researchers; however, this series must be reviewed by Russell Library staff prior to patron use. Family correspondence,
excluding correspondence with Ina Dillard Russell and Richard B. Russell, Sr., is restricted. With the exception of family
correspondence and some incoming correspondence, the documents were created primarily by Russell and his office staff. The
general subject matter includes such topics as national defense, foreign policy, Vietnam, federal judgeships, the Warren Commission,
office matters, legislation, and family affairs.

The folder contains one nine-page Air Intelligence Information Report and six photo slides. The report details the Senator's
observations during the trip, including the sighting of a pair of unidentified flying objects ("flying saucers") by Senator
Russell and two others; descriptions of Dnieperpetrovsk airfield, passenger and military aircraft, and radar receivers near
Moscow; observations on Russian trains, railroad mechanisms and procedures; and hand-drawn diagrams of a Russian jet bomber
and a railroad gauge switching operation. Slides depict Senator Russell with companions at a war memorial in Baku, beside
a train carriage, at the Intourist Hotel, and in Tbilisi or Sochi; and passengers standing by the train between Baku and Tbilisi.

USS Richard B. Russell (SSN 687), the thirty-seventh and final Sturgeon class nuclear attack submarine to be built, had its
keel laid at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Newport News, Virginia on October 19, 1971. The ship was christened
Richard B. Russell (SSN 687) on January 12, 1974 by Elizabeth Talmadge and Herman Talmadge was the speaker at the launching
ceremony. During its eighteen years of service USS Richard B. Russell was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, seven Navy
Unit Commendations, and seven Battle Efficiency "E" awards. On June 24, 1994 the ship was decommissioned. This collection
includes several flags, one model of the USS Russell, a scrapbook, stickers and patches, and inactivation ceremony programs.

Excluding a brief autobiographical sketch of Smith, the focus of the collection is U. S. Senator Richard B. Russell, Jr. News
clippings and mementos such as the announcement and platform for Governor of Georgia in 1930 and ballots for that election
document the early years of Russell's career. News clippings begin in 1930 and extend to 1970. There are also programs of
events memorializing the Senator after his death, as well as a few items concerning the Richard B. Russell Memorial Library.
A copy of Senator Russell's will is included. Smith's record of mailed contributions to Russell's campaign fund is also part
of the collection.
The collection also contains photographs of various United States government officials (Robert McNamara, Herman Talmadge,
Frank Carlson, Robert G. Stephens, Jr.), including former presidents (Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower,
John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson). Other miscellaneous photographs include images of the Biltmore House in Ashville, North
Carolina and a group of high school students from Athens, Georgia visiting Washington, D.C.

The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup C, Series XII: MacArthur Hearings documents the work of the Joint Senate
Committees on Armed Services and Foreign Relations from Russell's perspective. The four subseries are correspondence file,
subject file, hearings materials, and committee prints. This series includes correspondence, reports, memoranda, briefs, newspaper
clippings, speeches, press statements, and printed materials. The hearings materials consist of an accordion folder and a
black notebook, which was carried by Senator Russell to the hearings. Both contain notes written by Russell during the hearings,
speeches and statements by Russell, analyses of testimony for purposes of strategy, hearing summaries, and printed reports.

of Georgia; the thirty-eight years of his Senate career, 1933-1971; and posthumous stories. There is also an almost complete
record of the entire Russell family, from weddings to deaths and even clips of nieces' and nephews' school honors. The scrapbooks
were maintained by the office staff (several were compiled by family members) and include clippings from newspapers and magazines,
including news and feature items, editorials, cartoons, photographs, and mementos. See also scrapbooks in the papers of Senator
Russell's mother, Ina Dillard Russell, and his aunt, Addie Day Russell.
