The collection consists of biographical information, financial papers, scrapbook/school book, medical notebooks, printed material,
and photographs. Conway's typed autobiography describes his life as a child on the plantation, his Civil War experiences,
and his medical career. His medical notebooks list patients and their treatments. He also wrote a notebook about early medicine
and remedies. The school notebook of Mamie Conway (Dr. Conway's daughter) was begun while she was a student at the Lucy Cobb
Institute (Athens, Ga.) and later turned into a scrapbook of clippings and mementos. Photographs include the wedding of Mamie
Conway and William C. Mizelle/Mizell in 1904. Additionally, there are postcards to Mary Ann and Ola Kemp and Mr. and Mrs.
Douglas P. Dent; a small number of items from Conway Mizelle's travels in Cuba; and material related to Patrick Mizelle at
the Monastery of the Holy Spirit (Conyers, Ga.).

William Armstrong Smith was a Georgia state senator from the 34th District (Fulton County), from 1966 to 1974. During this
time, Smith introduced various bills, served on and/or chaired numerous senate committees, and actively supported the development
of the Republican Party in Georgia. The collection documents his career and to a lesser degree his campaigns as well as his
continued interest in legislative matters after his senate career ended (1975-1978). The majority of the collection consists
of correspondence, newspaper clippings, financial records, and legislative bills. There are approximately six linear feet
of publication materials produced by various sources covering subjects such as education, insurance, transportation, and planning.
Another important aspect of the collection is correspondence Smith created after his senate career with Georgia politicians.
Correspondents include: Howard "Bo" Callaway, John J. Flynt, Jr., Wyche Fowler, Zell Miller, Sam Nunn, as well as United States
Presidents Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon.

Excluding a brief autobiographical sketch of Smith, the focus of the collection is U. S. Senator Richard B. Russell, Jr. News
clippings and mementos such as the announcement and platform for Governor of Georgia in 1930 and ballots for that election
document the early years of Russell's career. News clippings begin in 1930 and extend to 1970. There are also programs of
events memorializing the Senator after his death, as well as a few items concerning the Richard B. Russell Memorial Library.
A copy of Senator Russell's will is included. Smith's record of mailed contributions to Russell's campaign fund is also part
of the collection.
The collection also contains photographs of various United States government officials (Robert McNamara, Herman Talmadge,
Frank Carlson, Robert G. Stephens, Jr.), including former presidents (Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower,
John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson). Other miscellaneous photographs include images of the Biltmore House in Ashville, North
Carolina and a group of high school students from Athens, Georgia visiting Washington, D.C.

These papers document the personal life of Melvin Ernest (M. E.) Thompson, Georgia's first lieutenant governor and participant
in the famed "Three Governors Controversy." The collection consists of personal correspondence, certificates and diplomas,
history regarding the Thompson and Edenfield families, clippings, campaign speeches and announcements, and Sunday school sermons
delivered by M. E. Thompson. Two hundred and nineteen, primarily black-and-white, photographs depict the Thompson family;
the dedication of the Little White House at Warm Springs in 1947; Thompson's campaigns; members of the Georgia House of Representatives
and Georgia Senate (1947-1948); and the unveiling of Thompson's portrait at the State Capitol. Of particular interest are
the six television campaign advertisements featuring Thompson's views about the county unit system, automobile tags, taxation,
the state highway system and toll roads, and the integration of Georgia's public schools.
