The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup C, Series XII: MacArthur Hearings documents the work of the Joint Senate Committees on Armed Services and Foreign Relations from Russell's perspective. The four subseries are correspondence file, subject file, hearings materials, and committee prints. This series includes correspondence, reports, memoranda, briefs, newspaper clippings, speeches, press statements, and printed materials. The hearings materials consist of an accordion folder and a black notebook, which was carried by Senator Russell to the hearings. Both contain notes written by Russell during the hearings, speeches and statements by Russell, analyses of testimony for purposes of strategy, hearing summaries, and printed reports.

Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup E, Series III: Scrapbooks document Senator Russell's 1930 campaign for governor of Georgia; the thirty-eight years of his Senate career, 1933-1971; and posthumous stories. There is also an almost complete record of the entire Russell family, from weddings to deaths and even clips of nieces' and nephews' school honors. The scrapbooks were maintained by the office staff (several were compiled by family members) and include clippings from newspapers and magazines, including news and feature items, editorials, cartoons, photographs, and mementos. See also scrapbooks in the papers of Senator Russell's mother, Ina Dillard Russell, and his aunt, Addie Day Russell.

The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup C, Series X: Civil Rights relates to many aspects of the civil rights issue. Almost all of the files deal with black-white relations in the United States, particularly those involving legislative action during Senator Russell's career in the Senate. Issues, such as the antilynching bill, the Fair Employment Practices Committee, racial integration, and the various civil rights bills from 1948 until 1964, are documented. There are also records related to other topics such as cloture, the literacy voting bill, the poll tax, school prayer, and some subjects which are indirectly related to the race issue. Any additional non-textual materials originally filed with papers were removed for preservation purposes and improved access. These materials include photographs, audiovisual items, scrapbooks, vertical files, memorabilia, and books.

The General files include correspondence, speeches, financial records, and newspaper clippings relating to Governor Hardman's gubernatorial campaigns. There are also fragmentary accounts of the 1894 campaign for State Senator. The most prolific records are from the 1926 and 1928 gubernatorial campaigns. The County files were kept in the campaign years 1926 and 1928 and are arranged alphabetically then chronologically by county. The majority of correspondence consists of mass-mailings to the electorate. There is also some correspondence between the candidate and his supporters.

The Subject files include correspondence and materials pertaining to specific geographic regions, such as Africa and the Middle East, and countries such as Cuba, Angola, the Dominican Republic and Vietnam. Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup E, Series V: Artifacts include Russell's Senate office furnishings, the chair he used on the Senate Floor, his campaign ephemera, cartoons and artwork, and his official and personal gifts. Of significant interest is his childhood baseball card collection; there are approximately 1100 tobacco cards dating from the period 1911-1913, and most are in very good condition. Throughout his public service career, Russell received many plaques, citations, proclamations, honorary degrees, resolutions, and presentation certificates. Some of the more prestigious were honorary degrees from Oglethorpe University and John Marshall University, the James Forrestal Award, the Mississippi Distinguished Civilian Service Award, the Great American Award, and others from military, agricultural, business, and civic groups.

The collection includes papers found among the papers of J. Aubrey Smith (collection UGA 08-007) which were transferred from the University of Georgia Walter J. Brown Media Archive to the University Archives in 2008. Harry Brown recorded an account of his life and career, aided by his friends, Rosslyn Smith and her husband, University of Georgia Agricultural Extension film maker, J. Aubrey Smith. Judging from a note enclosed with the tape cassettes, it appears that Ms. Smith interviewed Brown and used the lengthy taped interview to develop the typed text for his approval. Brown covers events in his life and his perspective on agricultural life in the first half of the 20th century. He also discusses the operations of the many government operations in which he played a role. In addition to a finished manuscript of his memoir, this collection includes early drafts and outlines, notes, correspondence and both tapes of the interview with Brown and a transcript of the tapes.

The collection consists of papers of Peninah W. Thomas and the Thomas family of Athens (Ga.) from 1821-1959. The papers include correspondence, bills and receipts, account books, legal documents, and sermons (1890s) written by Robert Toombs DuBose. The bills and receipts (1821-1910) contain several receipts for wages paid by Peninah W. Thomas to freedmen. The account books (1834-1845) contain bank accounts of Stevens Thomas and lists of accounts and purchases. The correspondence includes letters (1838-1870) between Peninah W. Thomas and her daughters Ella (Hull), Batavia (Clinch), and Mary (Saffold). The letters mainly contain news of family or friends and social events, but of particular interest are letters from Batavia living in Connecticut during the Civil War. The letters discuss the fall of Ft. Sumter and northerners' inability to understand southern attitudes. Also included are letters from Thomas Reynolds and John Shannon discussing plantation management, the cotton market, and other details of Thomas' business interests. From 1870-1941 letters are between Jennie Stovall (DuBose) and Robert Toombs DuBose, mostly personal but also containing some information on Georgia land sales, his ministry, and service in the Georgia House of Representatives.
