Marcus Wayland Beck was born in Harris County, Georgia and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1881. He passed the
bar in 1883 and began practicing law in Jackson County. He served as a Georgia state senator, Solicitor General of the Flint
Circuit and judge for the same circuit. After fighting in the Spanish American War, he returned to Georgia and was appointed
as associate justice of the Georgia Supreme Court. He was eventually appointed as the presiding judge, a position he maintained
until he retired in 1937. The Marcus W. Beck Diaries reflect his day to day personal and judicial activities as Justice of
the Georgia Supreme Court (1905-1937) and as Presiding Justice (1917-1937).

The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection Subgroup C, Series VII: Political Patronage documents the many individuals from Georgia
and elsewhere who sought Senator Russell's assistance in winning federal appointments or jobs, and materials here reflect
his role in the process. Requests are for presidential appointments, federal judgeships, federal attorneys and assistant attorneys,
federal marshals and deputy marshals, federal jobs, Georgia-based postmasters, and out-of-state judgeships. Any additional
non-textual materials originally filed with papers were removed for preservation purposes and improved access. These materials
include photographs, audiovisual items, scrapbooks, vertical files, memorabilia, and books.

The Annie Beth Abney Collection of Nathaniel E. Harris Research Files consists of photographs and correspondence gathered
by Abney while writing a master's thesis at the University of Georgia on Nathaniel Harris who served as Governor of Georgia
from 1915 to 1917. Prior to his term as governor he also served in the Georgia House of Representatives and Senate, and as
a judge in the Superior Court of the Macon Circuit. Harris was an attorney by profession. The photographs document Harris
family gravesites and Governor Harris's affiliation with the Mulberry Street Methodist Church (Macon, GA) where he was an
active member for fifty years. Correspondence in the collection includes letters written by Governor Harris; Warren Roberts,
a fellow church member; and Governor Harris's son, Walter Harris. The subject matter of the letters centers on Harris's church
activities and personal family matters dated 1866 (copy) and 1957.

The Van Giesen Family Collection contains the manuscript materials of the Uriah Van Giesen family of Savannah. The collection

Van Giesen's service to the Confederacy in Company B, 2nd Georgia Battalion. His diary, correspondence and military papers
detail his service until 1864 when he was discharged because of chronic hepatitis. Also included are some materials of Van
Giesen's son Frank S. Van Giesen, a broker and magistrate also of Savannah. Some materials in the collection relate to the
Ancker family (the family of F.S. Van Giesen's wife, Carrie).

Of note are Judge Morgan's files relating to highly publicized cases, such as Wallace Butts v. Curtis Publishing Company,
civil rights cases heard in District Court in Georgia and the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits, and materials relating to the split
of the Fifth Circuit into the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits in 1981.

The collection consists of genealogy, correspondence, writings, photographs, daguerreotypes, and printed material. The early
correspondence concerns the LeConte, Furman and Carter families. More recent correspondence is of Carolyn Shaw McMillan, a
great granddaughter of Emma Florence LeConte Furman. Much of this correspondence deals with efforts to preserve LeConte-Woodmanston
and to reconstruct the botanical garden. In 1973 the site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and of the
original 3,354 acres, 63.8 acres were deeded to the Garden Club of Georgia in 1977. Most of the writings are by Emma Florence
LeConte Furman, who kept diaries for many years, and also wrote of her travels and her family.

He was admitted to the Bar in 1916 and served as official court reporter of the Blue Ridge Circuit. Hawkins was nominated
Associate Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court in the Democratic primary held September 8, 1948. The papers of Judge Hawkins
include correspondence and printed materials related to his 1948 campaign, a small number of administrative and case files
maintained by legal assistant Harold Glore, personal correspondence, clippings and photographs.
