The collection consists of materials related to Studies in Southeastern Indian Languages (Athens : University of Georgia Press, 1975), including a proof copy, typescripts, notes, and other material relating to researches on various topics, development of the printed book, various drafts of the essays included, some relevant correspondence, and production notes. Studies in Southeastern Indian languages is the outgrowth of a series of symposia on the subject in the early 1970s. James M. Crawford of the University of Georgia headed the efforts to produce this volume of essays and the task was completed under his editorship.

The entries reflect his observations regarding a myriad of topics including farming, hunting, slavery, the aftermath of the American Revolution, and Native Americans. The collection also contains several surveyor's maps of property held by the Butler family in Wilkes County (Ga.).

The collection consists of clippings, printed material, manuscripts, photographs, correspondence, and ephemera documenting a broad range of events, activities, people, and places in the state of Georgia from the earliest American Indian settlements through the early 1980s and, specifically, the history of senators in Georgia through the late 1970s. Drafts and research materials for Josephine Mellichamp's book, Senators from Georgia, provide an abundance of information on the careers of Georgia senators. The drafts of "Georgia Heritage" contained in these papers may be the only extant copies of the manuscript since the material was never published. The collection also contains a small collection of printed works.

Topics documented within the collection include the Georgia militia; the Revolutionary War; Indian affairs in Georgia during the 1830s (particularly treaties); shipping (1770s-1780s); and boundary disputes between Georgia and Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The series also contains administrative records and correspondence pertaining to the activities of the Confederate government and the Georgia military troops during the Civil War. These records include materials of Ira R. Foster (Georgia Quartermaster General), H. H. Waters (Executive Secretary, Dept. of Georgia), Henry C. Wayne (Georgia Adjutant General), and Jared I. Whitaker (Georgia Commissary General).
