The collection consists of records of the Athens (Ga.) Klan #5 of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) from 1921-1930. The records include correspondence, newsletters, minutes, quarterly reports, membership cards, dues records, recommendation cards, receipts, and forms for robe requisitions relating to the activities of the Athens KKK #5. The correspondence (1921-1929) contains letters to the Klan asking for financial assistance, thank-yous for assistance rendered, as well as official correspondence, some from national KKK headquarters on membership standings, meetings, induction ceremonies, and recruitment. The correspondence also discusses Georgia politics, especially the 1926 gubernatorial election. The minutes (1925-1926) document Klan meetings and contain information on dues paid, elections, social events or official ceremonies, help for the needy, and investigations of new or current members.

Reverend Clifford Hodges Brewton served as press aide to Lester Maddox during his terms as governor and lieutenant governor of Georgia. This collection contains materials Brewton compiled in order to write a book (never published) about Governor Maddox. The scope of the collection covers both the gubernatorial (1967-1971) and the lieutenant governor (1971-1975) administrations of Maddox including the campaigns for each office as well as his 1968 bid for the U.S. presidency. The collection includes press releases, speeches, research materials, clippings, magazine articles, photographs, audiocassettes, and ¼-inch audiotapes.

The collection consists of materials collected by Reverend Clifford H. Brewton relating to Lester Maddox's terms as governor (1967-1971) and lieutenant governor (1971-1975), as well as his 1966 gubernatorial and 1968 campaigns. Brewton collected the materials for the purpose of writing a biography of Maddox, although it was never published. Audiovisual materials in the collection supplement the paper materials documenting Maddox's term as governor of Georgia and his subsequent campaigns for president of the United States in 1968 and for lieutenant governor of Georgia in 1970. Included among the four audiocassettes and 22 reels of ¼" audiotape are recordings of several campaign commercials for radio broadcast for both campaigns and speeches delivered for public events and private organizations throughout Georgia in his official capacity of governor.

Correspondents include Alexander S. Clay and David B. Hill. The collection also includes correspondence to Clark Howell, Jr. pertaining to World War II and materials relating to the estate of Evan P. The personal papers include correspondence relating to Russell"s involvement on the Board of Trustees at the University of Georgia and as a member of the first Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, family related correspondence, and a few speeches made by Russell. The political series (1888-1938) contains mostly correspondence pertaining to various campaigns for public and judicial offices, including his 1911 gubernatorial bid. The business/finance records include bank statements, bills and receipts, and miscellaneous items. Surrency Collection of Political Materials consists of political campaign materials collected by Surrency over the course of his career as law librarian and professor at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and, later at the University of Georgia. It covers the years 1946-1964 and includes printed materials, handbooks, press releases, news clippings, bumper stickers, buttons, and pamphlets. Materials document Democratic and Republican Party campaigns at the national level and the Pennsylvania state or local level including Adlai Stevenson's 1952 presidential campaign and the 1964 "Republicans for Johnson" presidential campaign. The collection consists of the papers of Rodney M. Cook from 1951 to 1978. The political series (1951-1978) contains papers relating to Cook's campaigns for public office including the Atlanta Board of Aldermen (1961, 1965), Atlanta Mayor (1969), Georgia Legislature (1965-1970), Congress (1972), and Georgia Governor (1978). The series also contains records relating to Cook's involvement with Republican Party activities at the local, state, and national level. The Aldermen series (1951-1972) documents Cook's service on the Atlanta Board of Aldermen. Records include subject files and committee files relating to such subjects as civil rights, Atlanta government, urban renewal, and zoning. The Alexander S. Clay Papers is one of the earliest collections of Congressional papers held by the Russell Library and documents the beginnings of modern, federal policy-making in the twentieth century. The collection consists of correspondence between Senator Clay and his constituents, government officials and public servants, members of his family, and others between 1900 and 1914. Most of the letters are incoming correspondence. Topics discussed in the correspondence include the appointment of postmasters and other civil servants, nominations for students seeking admission to the United States Military Academy (West Point) and Naval Academy (Annapolis), tariffs and international trade legislation, the opening of the Panama Canal, U.S. Supreme Court cases and justice appointments, women's suffrage, Prohibition, Georgia gubernatorial elections, the 1908 presidential election, expansion of rural postal delivery service, relations between the United States and the Philippines, and the 1910 federal census. Also included in the collection are letters received after Clay's death, a photograph, postage stamps, and U.S. Army records from the 31st Regiment of the Georgia Volunteer Infantry (which Clay's son, Frank Butner Clay, served in as a captain) that were collected by the Clay family.
