The collection consists of two diaries of Cyprian Porter Willcox. Entries dating July-September 1848 discuss the French Revolution of 1848; the succeeding Republic government; and military and political issues of Prussia, Germany, Italy and the United States, including slavery. Part of the volume outlines the history of the United States, including the founding of the original colonies and the revolution of 1776. Entries dating April 1852-September 1854 detail Willcox's trip through Europe, including travels in Spain, France, Germany, Denmark, and Switzerland. He discusses time spent in cities and regions including Valencia, Madrid, Cadiz, and Granada, Spain; Marseilles and Paris, France; Munich, Berlin, and Augsburg, Germany; and Copenhagen, Denmark. Entries for the various cities and regions vary in concentration and detail, but often include observations on architecture, the characteristics of the area, accommodations, weather, food, and people. The entry for Madrid includes a lengthy discourse on a bullfight Willcox attended. The second diary contains an inscription, "My father's book of travels in Europe as a young man, Athens, March 19, 1933."

The collection consists of letters from Cecil W. Chapman mainly to his wife, Claudia W. Chapman with some to his daughter Suzanne, from 1944-1945. Written during World War II, Chapman describes his voyage to Great Britain including descriptions of the ship and life on board, life in England, the countryside, and people he meets. His letters from Europe were written mainly from Belgium and Germany with a few from France in which, due to censorship restrictions, mainly discuss the weather and the problems it causes for troop movements, camp life, descriptions of the area, his administrative duties, other officers, and a little on battle activities. Chapman was wounded in April 1945 and his last letters, written through May, describe his wounds, recovery, and hospital life in England.

The collection consists of papers of Kate Harben Jones from 1922-1947. Includes corrected typescripts of Jones' essays, short stories, and reminiscences; photographs of the Jones family; correspondence; and v-mail. Most of the correspondence (1933-1945) consists of letters to Jones from her son, Herbert F. Jones, during his military service in World War II. Herbert wrote from Fort Riley (Kan.), Camp Gordon (Ga.), Fort Dix (N.J.), and Fort Pierce (Fla.) describing his military training, military service clubs, and the local areas. After being shipped overseas (1944), Herbert wrote from England, Germany, and France describing the area, the people and their reaction to American military troops, the Normandy invasion, reconnaissance patrols, wounds he received, his medical treatment, and military activity after Germany's surrender. The correspondence also contains letters to Kate Jones from other family members and literary acquaintances.
