The collection consists of a diary kept by Vincent F. Trago during his services with Company I of the 15th Ohio Infantry Regiment in 1864. Trago describes actions during the Atlanta Campaign, trading with Confederate soldiers at Kennesaw during a lull in battle, and casualties and burials at Pickett's Mill, Georgia. Some diary entries may have been written by Hugh L. Long, of the same unit. The collection also contains papers relating to reunions of the 15th Ohio dating 1900-1904.

All of these items were collected by Dr. Henry King Stanford during his studies at the University of Heidelberg between September of 1936 and July of 1937. The accession folder for this collection also contains Stanford's narrative translations of the posters, as well as photocopies of three postcards and one Coca-Cola Nazi-era beer mat.

The journal, titled Through Western Eyes: A China diary, documents Paulk's trip to lecture at Yunnan University in Kunming, China. The appendix of the journal concerns the visit of Professor Zhang Xin-he to Western Carolina University. The collection also consists of photographs and a letter. Photographs, undated, appear to be of family members, but most are unidentified. The letter, undated, Darlington School, Rome, Georgia, addresses "Cher Paul," is signed "Petit," and regards a visit at Terre Rouge and writings that were accepted.

The papers include bills and receipts of Samuel Austin Cook, a diary of Anna Maria, but mostly correspondence. The diary (1861-1867) entries discuss social life in Georgia during and after the Civil War, politics, the progress of the war, and Union troops in and around Milledgeville (Ga.). The correspondence consists of letters between Anna Maria and Samuel Austin Cook both before and after their marriage; letters to Anna Maria from her father Thomas F. Green, her children Callie Cook and Ansel Cook, and from her nephew Gerald Cook. The correspondence discusses news of family or friends and social activities.

The collection consists of the diary of a blockade runner during the Civil War from December 1861 through February 1862. The diary describes the voyage from New York to Halifax, Nova Scotia and the return voyage on the brigantine the Standard of Windsor, loaded with dry goods, food, and medicine for the Confederate government. The author describes in detail the weather, sea conditions, eating habits, and life aboard ship; fears of capture by Union forces; maneuvers used to run the blockade; and off loading the cargo. Also contained in the collection are research notes, speeches, and correspondence of William Porter Kellam pertaining to his research of the diary. Kellam attributes the diary to James Dickson in Savannah, Georgia.

The collection consists of two diaries of Cyprian Porter Willcox. Entries dating July-September 1848 discuss the French Revolution of 1848; the succeeding Republic government; and military and political issues of Prussia, Germany, Italy and the United States, including slavery. Part of the volume outlines the history of the United States, including the founding of the original colonies and the revolution of 1776. Entries dating April 1852-September 1854 detail Willcox's trip through Europe, including travels in Spain, France, Germany, Denmark, and Switzerland. He discusses time spent in cities and regions including Valencia, Madrid, Cadiz, and Granada, Spain; Marseilles and Paris, France; Munich, Berlin, and Augsburg, Germany; and Copenhagen, Denmark. Entries for the various cities and regions vary in concentration and detail, but often include observations on architecture, the characteristics of the area, accommodations, weather, food, and people. The entry for Madrid includes a lengthy discourse on a bullfight Willcox attended. The second diary contains an inscription, "My father's book of travels in Europe as a young man, Athens, March 19, 1933."

Mrs. Hardman (Emma Wiley Griffin) maintained the majority of family-related papers in this series. Included are early photographs of Governor Hardman, genealogical information, courtship letters, and marriage congratulations. This series also contains various family letters from 1908 to 1953, letters and cards of sympathy on the death of Hardman in 1937, Mrs. Hardman's household financial papers, material documenting her world tour in 1953, and cards received during her illness in 1953. Her obituaries from several newspapers were added to the file. Additional family correspondence for the years 1927 to 1933 can be found in Series V. Governor, B. Office Correspondence.
