This collection contains manuscript materials for five of Horace Montgomery's works. They document his scholarly contributions
as author of Howell Cobb's Confederate Career, Johnny Cobb: Confederate Aristocrat, and Cracker Parties; co-author of Civilzation
Through the Centuries; and editor of Georgians in Profile: Historical Essays in Honor of Ellis Merton Coulter, published by
the University of Georgia Press in 1959. The authors of the latter festschrift were former students of Dr. Coulter.

The collection consists of a memoir of Alonzo Church, D. D. (1793-1862) minister and former president of the University of
Georgia, was written by William L. Mitchell for Reverend John S. Wilson and the Presbyterian Synod of Georgia on 20 September
1865, as part of the Synod's project "to prepare a memorial record of each one of the ministerial members who have departed
this life since the erection of the Synod." Included in this collection is a Xerox of an early typescript of the original,
a recent typescript, copy of a cover letter to Dr. E. M. Coulter, and note from Dr. Coulter pertaining to the memoir. This
memoir, although somewhat fragmentary, is an important record of the life of Alonzo Church, his university policies and administration,
and, by inference, Athens during the antebellum period.

The collection consists of papers of Margaret Davis Cate from 1890-1964. The papers include correspondence; printed material;
research notes pertaining to the history of Sea Island, St. Simons Island, and Ft. Frederica, Georgia; photographs; and ledgers
(1926-1935) containing information about her poultry business. Of particular interest is correspondence between Cate and fellow
historians including E.M. Coulter and Kenneth Colemen; correspondence with archaeologist Charles Fairbanks relating to the
preservation of Ft. Frederica; and letters between Cate, John Marsh, and Margaret Mitchell Marsh. The collection also contains
records relating to Cate's personal genealogical research.

The materials document Spalding's interests in historic preservation, particularly in Clarke County (Ga.); his tenure as professor
of history at the University of Georgia (1966-1991) including information on the Phinizy Lectures; his editorship (1974-1982)
of the Georgia Historical Quarterly; as well as information pertaining to publication of his books and articles.
The collection also contains information on the Cobbham Historic District, Athens Clarke Heritage Foundation, Lucy Cobb Institute,
and the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. Correspondents include Joyce Blackburn, Tom Watson Brown, Kenneth Coleman,
E. Merton Coulter, Walter Stanton Forbes, Mills B. Lane IV, Valeria and Piero Leida, David T. Morgan, Walker Percy, James
K. Reap, and Betty Wood.
