The Charles H. Wharton collection is comprised primarily of Dr. Wharton's investigations of bottomland forests and wetlands and the effects of stream channelization. He studied many river systems in the Southeastern United States including the Alcovy, a tributary of the Ocmulgee, the Altamaha, the Chattahoochee, the Flint, the Nantahala, the Savannah, and the Tallulah. Swamps which benefitted from his research and advocacy include the Atchafalaya in Louisiana and the Congaree in South Carolina. He is best known for his pioneering work The Natural Environments of Georgia.

The collection consists of a letter from Lafayette McLaws to Isaac R. Pennypacker, editor of the Weekly Press in Philadelphia, on June 25, 1886. The letter is a reply from McLaws to Pennypacker as to whether or not General Fitz-John Porter had received an order to advance at the Battle of Antietam. McLaws tells of his action to find such an order, what finding or not finding the order might mean, even years later. He includes some information regarding his movements in the battle as well.

The collection consists of a letter from A. A. Echols, dated November 12, 1860 from Savannah, Georgia, to Emory Washburn, former governor of Massachusetts. This lengthy letter, prompted by Lincoln's election six days earlier, expresses early Southern reaction to that election, Civil War causes, and the Southern course of action. Echols, apparently a long-time friend of Washburn, mildly criticizes him for joining the Republican Party, predicts that the effect of Lincoln's election will be peaceful secession, and proposes some commercial realignments between the North and South.

The collection consists of deeds, inventories, indentures, land grants, receipts, and correspondence of the Williams family from 1787-1905. Early materials relate to Dawson Williams, father of Joseph, and include correspondence and bills. Of particular interest is correspondence of Joseph Williams, from camps near Atlanta, then Camp Anderson (Andersonville, Ga.); Dawson Williams, from camps near Atlanta, Georgia, and Brown Hospital, Milledgeville, Georgia; and Robert G. Williams, from camps near Chattanooga, Russellville, and Greeneville, Tennessee, and on the Shenandoah River, "Clark" County. Correspondence contains little information about battles or troop movements, and mainly discusses life for those at home, crops, and requests for food and clothing.
