by Crews: "Mell: if not for you, we both know this book might never have been written ... Not too shabby for an old drunk
written off as finished, eh?"

before mailing), beginning "Since I wrote you last I have received a letter from Mr. Pengree who informs me that the Spaniards
pretend to hold and protect the Negroes on acct of their being British property …"
