Correspondence is professional in nature and contains both incoming letters to Downes and copies of his outgoing letters documenting Downes' career as a music critic and lecturer as well as his involvement with such organizations as the Berlioz Society, the Bohemian Club (N.Y.), the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, Columbia Artists Management, Metropolitan Opera Company, National Council of American-Soviet Friendship, National Council for the Arts, Sciences, and Professions, the New York Times, Rachmaninoff Fund, and the World's Fair of 1939. Major correspondents include Richard Aldrich, Ernest Bloch, Alec Hammerslough, Charles Hubbard, Serge Koussevitsky, Stuart Montgomery, Kenneth Murray, Walter Naumburg, and Henry A. Wallace.

The collection consists of two poems, one rejoicing over Ellis' arrival in Georgia, the other denouncing Ellis' predecessor, John Reynolds, who was detested by the colonists. These have been reproduced in facsimile by the Ashantilly Press under the title A pair of odes. There is also a copy of the London Gazette, May 6-9, 1758, announcing Ellis as Reynolds' successor, a letter to Governor Ellis signed Edm. Atkin, dated Ft. Moore, Jan 25, 1760, regarding Indian Affairs, and a notice to Henry Ellis of a meeting of the Royal Society, dated Nov. 20, 1767 and signed Morton.

Two letters from Union surgeon William C. Towle written to his wife. First letter dates February 26, 1865 and details Towle's time in Savannah with the army and the newly free enslaved people he has hired since arriving. "I am living well, I pay a colored woman three dollars a month to cook for me, I have a man to take care of my horses and another to wait upon me..." Second letter dates May 29, 1865 and details his time in Augusta, seeing Jeff Davis pass through the town, and his knowledge of newly emancipated enslaved people who are told to "not consider the word Freedom as meaning Freedom from labor." Towle ends his second letter by promising to send "a negro girl" to his wife.
