The collection consists of papers of Herschel Vespasian Johnson and his family from 1832-1976. Papers include a copy of Johnson's autobiography, an album containing poetry, writings, and drawings, a few newspaper clippings, and correspondence. The autobiography, a copy of the original manuscript written by Johnson in 1867, covers Johnson's entire political career. Correspondence is mainly from Johnson to his daughter Tallulah Horne and her husband Pearce, with several to his daughter Gertrude discussing primarily family matters.

The collection consists of two diaries kept by Rebecca Foy consisting of handwritten accounts of marriages, births, deaths, illnesses, and remedies for illnesses and nosebleeds. The earliest birth recorded is "Anne Dasher, born Sept. 21, 1778." The final entry ("My ducks began to lay"), dated 1864. The collection also includes Book I – Vol. I, dated 1936, titled Fay Family of Effingham County, Georgia. Assorted family papers include: Biography of Edward Edwin Foy (1842-1907), written by Eloise Eugenia Foy Ward; one letter dated Jan. 31, 1933, addressed to Mrs. Ella Cordona, regarding a letter she had written attempting to locate George Foy, who had enslaved Cordona; and miscellaneous handwritten accounts of births and deaths of Foy family descendants. The diaries mention the purchase of the following enslaved people: Reuben, 1853, age 9; Jake, 1853; Lawrence, 1855; Elbert, 1855, age 12; Monroe and Sam, 1856; Stephen, 1856, age 10; Sam, 1857; Lewis, 1857, age 12. There is also mention of a few incidents of 'runaways' between 1858 and 1861.

The family papers include genealogy research, correspondence, clippings, photographs, land grants, deeds, wills, diaries and printed material related to the Gibbs, Wynn/e, Allen, Burns, Chenault, Fisher, and Parker families between 1826-2014. The Wynne family name has several variations in spelling including Wynne, Wynn, and Winn. In his 1912 article about the Wynn family reunion, Gus Edwards spells the surname without a final "e." He goes on to write, "In the long ago the family name used to be spelled with a final 'e,' thus, Wynne, but in later years somehow or other the family began to write simply, W-y-n-n." The ancestors of Robert Adin Gibbs (1874-1944) and Theola Fisher Parker (1876-1951) encompass the five major family lines in this collection. The collection also includes an address book, family bible, account book, recipe, receipts, and Civil War-era letters by various family members including those between Eliza Jane Wynne (1837-1916) and her husband Charles Rollin Gibbs (1835-1903).

The largest portion of the collection is comprised of Ann's diaries which detail her day-to-day life from the 1950s through 2009.

The collection consists of papers collected by Clara Mildred Thompson. Early papers include correspondence and depositions relating to Native American depredations in Georgia from 1786-1838. Letters, addressed mainly to Georgia governors, are from citizens who discuss Native American raids and violence to settlers. Correspondents include Joshua Inman, John Twiggs, Caleb Howell, Jared Irwin, Elijah Clarke, Benjamin Hawkins, John Clark, Stephen Hawkins, and C. Stephens. Depositions are of Abram Mordecai, John Burnett, Owen Bowen, Henry Carvel, Nathaniel Howell, and Isaac Green. The collection also consists of letters from Margaret Mitchell to C. Mildred Thompson from 1937-1938. Letters discuss Mitchell's admiration of Thompson's "Reconstruction of Georgia," her desire to meet the author, and Thompson's request for information about the Ku Klux Klan.

The collection consists of papers of Wilson Lumpkin from 1828-1869. The papers consist mainly of personal correspondence (1828-1859) from Lumpkin to his wife, Annis Hopkins Lumpkin, and children written from Washington, D.C. while he was serving as a U.S. Representative and Senator and during his involvement with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The collection also includes a "memorandum" notebook (1838-1869) in which Lumpkin recorded a few diary entries, genealogical notes, recollections of his childhood and political career, and lists of slave births. The collection included a broadside, Letter from Ex-Governor Lumpkin (BRO 1860 L4), which has been added to the broadside collection.

The collection consists of letters, pictures, clippings, manuscripts, programs, printed materials, notes, file cards, and other materials concerning the life, career, and writings of the late Dr. Clarence Leonard Jordan, founder of Koinonia Farms, an agricultural missionary enterprise, and inter-racial community. The early letters, largely from Clarence Jordan to his mother, are most revealing as to the character of the man. The many clippings and printed materials about Clarence Jordan and Koinonia also give insight into the community life, and the programs indicate the wide demand for Dr. Jordan as a speaker. The collection also includes the manuscripts, both written and typed, with annotations and/or corrections and revisions of many of Dr. Jordan's writings, particularly the Cotton Patch versions of the Gospels. The collection is arranged into folders but for the most part it has been described at container level.

Also included is the original manuscript of Dr. Coleman's book "Confederate Athens" including his resource notes, correspondence, reproduction of papers in other repositories, printed material, revisions, rough drafts, bibliography, preface and typescript of the complete book. It was published by the University of Georgia Press in 1968. In addition, over 8000 manuscript sheets and cards of notes assembled for the writing of "Georgia Journeys" with Sarah Gober Temple, published in 1961.

The collection documents the business transactions of the Union City Realty & Trust Co., and Consolidated Trust Co., its owners and major investors: John A. Phillips, J. H. Harris, Ida Harris, Mrs. M. E. Phillips; their creditors, partners, and many legal transactions. It proves an interesting perspective on the founding of Union City by land speculators complete with ad campaign promotions and possibly exploitations. The collection is comprised of correspondence, affidavits, depositions, land grant copies, land surveys, bonds, deeds, abstracts of titles, mortgages, court summons, petitions, settlements, judgements, FiFa's, promissory notes, accounts, receipts, stock certificates, news clippings, business cards, a will and a broadside. The greatest concentration of material is within the 1870-1911 period.

The collection consists of military papers, legal documents, and letters, pertaining to several aspects of the life and work of Edwin R. Alberti, from 1819 to 1863. Military papers include a special order for a furlough, orders to appear for a Court of Inquiry, an order signed by President John Quincy Adams' restoring Alberti to active duty after an inquiry into alleged misconduct, and acceptance of Alberti's resignation from the 4th Artillery. There are numerous Chattel mortgages, bills of sale, and deeds of gift for named enslaved women, men, and children, and legal papers regarding the distribution of people enslaved to heirs of Henry R. Sadler. The collection also consists of papers relating to the sloop B.S. Newcomb.
