The collection consists of papers of Thomas Reade Rootes Cobb from 1852-1862. Consists primarily of typescript copies of letters
to his wife, Marian Lumpkin Cobb (1860-1862) while commanding Cobb's Legion. The letters discuss Cobb's participation in the
Seven Days' Battle, the Battle of Antietam, and the Battle of 2nd Bull Run; and his attitude toward the events and personalities
he encountered during his military career.

The collection consists of correspondence, a diary, writings, and other papers of Robert G. Stone, who was a Confederate soldier
with Company K, 15th Georgia Infantry; together with land plats and indentures to property in Hancock and Washington Counties,
Ga.; and other ephemera such as Stone's C. S. A. cuff link and medals. Stone's few letters and diary entries follow his service
from 1860 through 1865, when he surrendered at Appomattox Court House shortly before General Lee's surrender. Stone left Sparta,
Georgia in 1860 and served in battles at Chattanooga, Richmond, Antietam, 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg, Appomattox Courthouse,
etc. His activities were recorded on a bible cover which is part of this collection.

The collection consists of papers of Edgeworth Bird and the Bird family from 1806, 1835-1949. The papers include correspondence,
clippings, photographs (ca. 1848-1900) of the Bird family, a commonplace book (1843-1848) of Sallie C. Baxter containing extracts
from her readings, an autograph book, an 1806 diary (author unknown) describing activities in Hancock and surrounding counties
in Georgia, and genealogies of the Baxter, Bird, and allied families. Early correspondence (1839-1851) is between members
of the Baxter family including letters between Thomas W. and Mary Baxter discussing his health, taxes, and land values; and
letters from Leroy M. Wiley to Thomas detailing Wiley's trip to England in 1839.
The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence between Bird and Smith family members including Edgeworth Bird, Sallie
Bird, Saida Bird (Smith), Wilson Edgeworth Bird, and Victor Edgeworth Smith. Of particular interest are letters (1856) from
Edgeworth to Sallie describing his visit to New York City, Fire Island (N.Y.), and U.S. politics and letters written between
family members during the Civil War. The Civil War letters from Edgeworth discuss the battles of Gettysburg (Pa.), Richmond
(Va.), 2nd Bull Run (Va.), Chickamauga, the Atlanta Campaign, and Sherman's March through Georgia. The letters also detail
the management of Granite Farm (Hancock County, Ga.), slavery, and Saida's studies.

The collection consists of the papers of the Branch family of Savannah, Georgia from 1830-1961. The bulk of the collection
consists of correspondence between Charlotte Sawyer Branch and her sons John L., Sanford W., and Hamilton McDevil Branch,
who served mainly in the 8th Georgia Infantry Regiment during the Civil War.
The letters describe the 1st Battle of Bull Run, the death of John, the subsequent capture of Sanford (who had stayed with
his dying brother), the Seven Days Battle, the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, and the Battle of Gettysburg, where Sanford was wounded
and captured again. Hamilton transferred to the 54th Georgia Infantry Regiment and writes about the regiment's involvement
in the Atlanta Campaign, particularly the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. He also writes from Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee
while serving with Nathan Bedford Forrest.
