The collection consists of personal and official papers of diplomat William Tapley Bennett from 1941 to 1980. The papers mainly
document Bennett's diplomatic and ambassadorial service with the United States Department of State, the United Nations Security
Council (1971-1977), and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's North Atlantic Council (1977-1983). Of particular note,
are the materials from Bennett's assignment as Ambassador to the Dominican Republic during the 1965 Dominican Crisis. Other
assignments documented include Austria, Portugal, and Maxwell Air Force Base. The papers also document his military service,
personal life, and involvement in international diplomatic organizations. Included are correspondence, speeches, clippings,
printed material, photographs, and appointment books.
