The collection consists of the papers of Cameron Douglas Flanigen from 1867-1941. The bulk of the materials (1897-1924) document Flanigen's activities as a member of the Athens Board of Education and pertain to Athens city schools. These materials include correspondence, financial records, speeches, reports, and writings documenting the conditions of both white and black schools in Athens, teacher and board member salaries, scores of teacher and principal examinations, educational requirements, and teacher appointments. Another substantial portion of the collection (1894-1936) pertains to Flanigen's involvement with the Athens Gas Light Company, as president of its successors the Athens Electric Railway Company and the Athens Railway and Electric Company, as well as vice-president of the Georgia Power Company. These materials include correspondence, reports, financial records, and speeches documenting the problems and development of local transportation systems in Athens. The collection also contains postcards, indentures, printed materials, and newspaper clippings.

The collection consists of correspondence, business papers, receipts, photographs, and print material. The bulk of the material centers on Mrs. Talmadge's work with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Board of Education, but the collection also includes personal correspondence and material relating to the Talmadge and Erwin families. The collections includes correspondence pertaining to the controversy which arose from DAR racial policies in the wake of the Marian Anderson incident, and material relating to issues facing the Georgia Board of Education during the 1950s including banning of textbooks and integration.
