Charlayne Hunter-Gault is a journalist and former correspondent for National Public Radio and CNN. In 1961 she and Hamilton Holmes became the first African Americans to attend the University of Georgia. Hunter-Gault has spent much of her career as a foreign correspondent, where she covered the fall and aftermath of apartheid in South Africa, as well as other political developments in Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. She has been awarded a Peabody award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism and was named Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists in 1986, among numerous other honors. This collection documents her experience as one the first two African American students at the University of Georgia and her career in journalism.
