The collection consists of papers of John A. Rockwell from 1866 to 1872, mainly correspondence written by Rockwell to his brother, Alfred P. Rockwell. The letters detail John Rockwell's activities as General Superintendent of the American Missionary Association for Middle and Southwest Georgia. Topics discussed include the establishment of schools for freedmen, financial matters, and funding of various projects. Also contained in the collection are a few letters from John Rockwell to Rev. Edward P. Smith which discuss the establishment of a trust fund with a loan from Alfred Rockwell.

The collection consists of papers of Mary Ann Rutherford Lipscomb and the Lipscomb family from 1885-1951. Most of the collection consists of photographs of the Lipscomb family, the Lucy Cobb Institute (Athens, Ga.), and the Tallulah Falls Industrial School (Ga.). The collection also contains notes and writings of Mary Ann Lipscomb as well as correspondence including letters from George Foster Peabody (1922) to Harry Hodgson of Athens, Georgia discussing education for African Americans and the university school system in Georgia.

The bulk of the material centers on Mrs. Talmadge's work with the D.A.R. and Board of Education, but the collection also includes personal correspondence and material relating to the Talmadge and Erwin families. The collections includes correspondence pertaining to the controversy which arose from DAR racial policies in the wake of the Marian Anderson incident, and material relating to issues facing the Georgia Board of Education during the 1950s including banning of textbooks and integration.
