There is much correspondence between "Howie" Holder and his wife and family during World War II. One group of letters from
Clementi to her husband while he was a POW were found in the prison camp 40 years after the war and returned to them. In
1995 Holder wrote a book about his POW experiences titled Escape to Russia.
Of special interest are letters between Clementi Lacey-Baker and Anton Frederik van Dam (1920-1976) in the Netherlands. They
were both 18 years old in 1938 when they began a pen pal relationship. They continued to be friends until his death in 1976.
One of his letters was listed in the 1972 Guiness Book of World Records as the longest letter ever written. It was begun
in 1940 and ended in 1945, and gave details about the German invasion of his country and the effect on his family. Years
later Clementi transcribed this 514 page letter and titled it "Dear Clem."
Printed material includes newsletters from the prison camp titled The Oflag 64 Item. There are scrapbooks/photo albums of
H. Randolph and Clementi Holder, Susan Lacey-Baker, and Anton van Dam.

The newsletters document information that Habitat for Humanity disseminated to its staff, volunteers, and the general public
from its formative years on into the 21st century. The older portion of these periodicals represent some of the earliest documents
in the Habitat for Humanity records. They provide insight into the development and operation of Koinonia Farm (now Koinonia
Partners) and how Habitat for Humanity grew out of this small, interracial, Christian farming community in Sumter County,
Georgia. The Koinonia newsletters also report on the intimidation and violence directed toward the farm--peaking in the late
1950s--because of its interracial status. Beginning in 1976, the periodicals focus on Habitat for Humanity as an established
organization through publications like Habitat Happenings, Habitattler, Habitat World, and Habichat. New issues of Habitat
World are continually added to the collection as they are published and received. Some of these newsletters share information
about the internal operations of Habitat for an audience of volunteers and staff, while others report on major projects and
events for a general readership.

between Korff while he was living in Mexico and his family back in Germany. The envelopes mailed post-WWII show British and
American censor marks. The poster displays a quote by Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, a German nationalist who was seen as an ideological
forebear to Nazism.

Contents: |
The collection consists of correspondence, financial papers, photographs, speeches and writings, and printed material arranged
in alphabetical order by name or subject. Although the bulk of the material concerns Caldwell's career, some are paersonal
and family papers and consist of correspondence with his parents, his brother Alvin, and various aunts, uncles and cousins,
including Hattie Dunlop who apparently suffered from paranoia. The farm papers deal with a house and land in Meriwether County
that had been in the Caldwell family for many years. Caldwell took it over in 1940, made many improvements, and considered
it his legal residence. Boxes 48-50 contain Caldwell's personal financial papers.
Of special interest are the Board of Regents papers; Walter Cocking controversy, Ty Cobb and the Cobb Educational Foundation;
Berry College papers; the Wallace Butts football scandal; and the papers of the colleges and universities in the University
System of Georgia with their various achievements or problems. Correspondents include Omer Clyde Aderhold, Walter Blackstock,
Callaway family (Pine Mountain, Ga.), Lamar Dodd, Stewart Gelders, Hodgson family (Athens, Ga.), Joseph Winthrop Holley, John
Alton Hosch, Lucy Stanley MacArthur, Moina Michael, Jonathan Clark Rogers, Steadman Vincent Sanford, Hughes Spalding, and

Contents: |
The Caldwell papers represent the emergence of the modern executive philosophy guiding the modern State University. Because,
for the first time, a filing schema has survived intact, there has been no need for reorganization of the papers to facilitate
user access, and the original provenance has thus been more or less preserved. The papers break down into four broad series
as follows: Series 1: Administrative Subject/Correspondence File 1927-1949. This series encompasses the fullest scope of
Caldwell's myriad duties as University President, and comprises 75% by bulk of the volume of the collection. Included are
extended subseries treating the University building program, the "Cocking Affair", the higher education of blacks in Georgia,
the emerging Landscape Architecture program, the increasing role of agricultural research in the postwar South, the early
standardization of Senior Class rings, the emergence of the University Center in Georgia, the vitality of the newly created
University of Georgia Press, and the WPA Georgia Writers Project. Series 2: Board of Regents Files 1932-1949. This series
documents interactions between Caldwell as University President and the state Board of Regents. Series 3: Wartime Administrative
Files, 1940-1948. This series follows the multiple hats which Caldwell wore in his various roles in support of America's involvement
in World War II. It is further organized into separate sub-series covering the following specific functions: Civilian Defense/Selective
Service/U.S. Armed Forces/War Program/Army Specialized Training Corps/Navy Training School/Personnel-Savannah Unit. Series
4: UGA Personnel Files 1937-1950. This is an alpha-ordered set of University personnel files for the indicated years (it
is not comprehensive).

The collection consists of two letters from Harry Crews to author James Leo Herlihy, from 1972-1973. Herlihy is known for
his novels All Fall Down (1960) and Midnight Cowboy (1965), as well as his play Blue Denim (1958), all of which were adapted
for film. The first letter concerns the University of Florida Writers' Conference, of which Crews is director. Crews updates
Herlihy on the dates of the conference, discusses compensation for his attendance, and requests a picture and biographical
sketch that includes Herlihy's publications. In the second letter, Crews thanks Herlihy for his praise of his book and suggests
that they get together soon.

The collection consists of the literary papers of American writer Harry Crews. These papers document his writing career up
through the publication of his twentieth book, An American Family: The Child With the Curious Marking (2006). Typed and holograph
manuscripts, correspondence, clippings, conference material, awards, literary and film contracts, financial statements, and
photographs make up the bulk of materials, which generally date from the mid-1960s onward.
Correspondence includes Crews' mentor Andrew Lytle (who first published Crews in The Sewanee Review), letters from college
friends/apprentice writers, and rejection slips and correspondences from prospective literary agents and publishers. Letters
from the period when Crews published his first two novels -- The Gospel Singer, Naked in Garden Hills - include correspondence
with his first literary agent, Bert Cochran, of American Authors, Inc., with John Hawkins of Paul Reynolds, Inc., who succeeded
Cochran, and with Crews' editor at William Morrow, Jim Landis. Correspondence appears from other American writers - John Ciardi,
Seymour Epstein, Maxine Kumin, William Meredith, Henry Van Dyke and others -- with whom Crews became acquainted through the
Bread Loaf Writers Conference and the University of Florida Writers Conference, the latter which he co-directed between 1970-1974
with fellow UF writer and professor Smith Kirkpatrick. Other writers represented include Malcolm Braly, Robert Olen Butler,
Erskine Caldwell, Daniel Mark Epstein, Barry Hannah, Jim Harrison, Joseph Heller, James Leo Herlihy, William Hjortsberg, Maxine
Kumin, Norman Mailer, Tom McGuane, Tim McLaurin, Donn Pearce, James Tiptree, Dan Wakefield, Charles Willeford and Miller Williams.
In the 1970s there is also correspondence between Crews and his friend and fellow Florida writer/screenwriter Donn Pearce
describing the screenwriting business, and an increasing flow of letters from anxious would-be producers seeking options on
his novels. This period also is marked by the appearance of correspondence with editors at Playboy and Esquire, with whom
Crews contracted to write magazine articles and (at Esquire) a monthly column, and with subsequent publishers and editors
at Atheneum, Harper & Row, and Alfred A. Knopf in the United States and at Martin Secker & Warburg in England.
In the 1990s correspondence files begin to include writers like Jay Atkinson, former student of Crews', and Mississippi novelist
Larry Brown, who first approached Crews as a fan in 1990 and with whom he would remain friends until Brown's death in 2004.

were also created by the younger Harman and feature his athletic career from 1926 through 1937. The two early scrapbooks feature
Harry's high school sports career at Woodberry Forest School in Woodberry, Virginia. One of these scrapbooks includes correspondence
from various coaches (including Georgia's coach H.J. Stegeman) to Harmon. The fourth scrapbook is devoted to Harry's athletic
endeavors at the University of Georgia. In addition to the scrapbooks, also included is the younger Harmon's Southeastern

The collection includes papers found among the papers of J. Aubrey Smith (collection UGA 08-007) which were transferred from
the University of Georgia Walter J. Brown Media Archive to the University Archives in 2008. Harry Brown recorded an account
of his life and career, aided by his friends, Rosslyn Smith and her husband, University of Georgia Agricultural Extension
film maker, J. Aubrey Smith. Judging from a note enclosed with the tape cassettes, it appears that Ms. Smith interviewed Brown
and used the lengthy taped interview to develop the typed text for his approval. Brown covers events in his life and his perspective
on agricultural life in the first half of the 20th century. He also discusses the operations of the many government operations
in which he played a role. In addition to a finished manuscript of his memoir, this collection includes early drafts and outlines,
notes, correspondence and both tapes of the interview with Brown and a transcript of the tapes.

From 1957 until 1971, the Administration and Press offices shared the same secretary and files. After 1971, the two offices

series. This series consists of those activities that are not directly associated with "legislating" or providing constituent

Senator's appointment books, telephone records, and White House tour requests. Topics include the desegregation of the University
of Mississippi in 1962; the civil action suit between Ivan Allen, Jr., Mayor of Atlanta, and Rev. Robert Hunter, leader of
the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1967; Vietnam; reaction to the Gulf of Tonkin and Mansfield Resolutions in

|
Dates: |
1793-1932 |
|
|
Contents: |
The collection consists of papers of Howell Cobb and the Cobb family from 1793 to 1932. The bulk of the collection is correspondence,
mostly addressed to Howell Cobb, dating from 1839 to 1868. There is a large amount of correspondence between Howell Cobb,
his wife Mary Ann Lamar, and her brother John B. Lamar. The letters discuss politics in both Georgia and the United States,
the Confederate States of America including its formation and administration, and information on Cobb's business interests,
especially his plantations. After Cobb's death in 1868, the remainder of the correspondence is between other family members
including John A. Cobb, Howell Cobb, Jr., Alexander Erwin, and Mary Erwin discussing family and social news, business interests,
and legal cases. While the correspondence primarily documents the Cobb, Lamar, Erwin, and Barrow faimilies, there is also
a large amount of correspondence from the Jackson, Hull, Rootes, Lumpkin, King, Pope, Rutherford, Prince, and Nisbet families.
The earliest material includes indentures and land grants (1793-1829) relating to Zachariah Lamar's business interests.
The clippings do not focus on Howell Cobb, with the very rare exception. These seem to have been donated by family but are
very general in nature. The journals and diaries are from family members and friends.
