A notebook of Captain Henry H. Carlton from 1860-circa 1880s. The notebook begins in 1860 as L. C. Cooper's notebook while a student at Franklin College (University of Georgia, Athens) and contains several literary pieces copied by Cooper. In 1861, Captain H. H. Carlton used the book to record the list of soldiers who served in the Troup Artillery during the Civil War. After the war someone, probably Edwin D. Newton, Secretary of the Survivors Association of Confederate Veterans of Northeast Georgia, added place of residence, death dates, and other data to the list. The notebook contains a mixture of various notes and includes material on Carlton's Company.

Harman's letters are written first from Forsyth, Georgia and then mainly from Notasulga, Alabama, where her family moved in 1855. Scattered letters are from Macon on her visits back to Georgia. The letters discuss family matters, the reaction of a young woman on the westward migration, and educational matters including Harmon's efforts to enter the teaching profession.

Divided into 17 sections, the document contains information on Georgia's geography, boundaries, location of rivers and towns, as well as French or Spanish settlements; trade with Great Britain; imported goods of British manufacture; trade with foreign countries; produce of Georgia; population and growth in the colony; the militia; forts and defenses; trade, treaties, population, and location of the Creek, Chickasaw, Choctaws, and Cherokee Indians; duties; civil officers including name, title of office, pay, and when appointed; and the court system.
