Abstract Or Scope:
The collection consists of records of the Laura Rutherford Chapter (Athens, Ga.) of the United Daughters of the Confederacy from 1895-1948. Includes scrapbooks (1928-1958, with gaps), writings and speeches of Mildred Lewis Rutherford, Cross of Honor applications and recipients, a dues ledger (1921-1926), and a few minutes (1913-1929, 1934-1936). The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, brochures, programs, and memorabilia relating to the activities of the organization and the Civil War.

The collection documents the administrative business of the University of Georgia during O.C. Aderhold's tenure as president, 1950-1967. Materials of particular interest are those documenting the desegregation of the University in January 1961 when Charlayne Hunter-Gault and Hamilton Holmes became the first two African American students to attend UGA. These files include administrative correspondence as well as letters from the public expressing support or opposition to desegregation.

In addition, there are some materials relating to his father, Howard W. Odum, and his brother, Howard T. Odum's, research.

J. Roy Rowland Papers, Series VI: Audiovisual includes one betacam videocassette, one betamax videocassette, 39 audiocassettes, 81 quarter-inch open reel tapes, 36 3/4" Umatic videocassettes, and 114 VHS videocassettes documenting U.S. House Representative J. Roy Rowland (b. 1926) who served twelve years as a Democrat from Georgia, 1983-1994. Rowland represented Georgia's 8th District, which included the cities of Macon (1983-1994), Albany, Valdosta, and Warner Robins (added to district in 1992). Rowland served on the Energy and Commerce Committee, the Veterans' Affairs Committee, the Public Works and Transportation Committee, and the Select Committee on Children, Youth and Families. He also was significantly involved in the National Commission on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), the National Commission to Prevent Infant Mortality, and the Congressional Sunbelt Caucus in addition to other memberships on boards, task forces, and caucuses. A medical doctor, Rowland's primary legislative interests focused health issues. Rowland also authored or supported legislation in the areas of transportation, agriculture, education, defense, the environment, and foreign affairs. Series VI: Audiovisual includes campaign ads, House of Representatives footage, news footage, interviews featuring Rowland, and policy-related media.

H. Branch Howe, Jr. papers, 1917-1999

Abstract Or Scope:

The collection includes biographical information, correspondence, and photographs. The correspondence is primarily between Howe and other microbiologists regarding genetics and neurospora; however, there is also birding, personal, and administrative correspondence. There are a small number of applications and proposals submitted to the UGA Graduate School by various departments desiring to offer PhD programs (1962-1963). There are a number of research grant proposals (1959-1979). Also included is information and statistics from the Athens bird count (1980-1998) and Branch Howe's papers concerning the Georgia Ornithological Society with some printed material. One large photo album documents the 100th Infantry Division during World War II and Howe experience during the war. The other photo album originally belonged to Clifford Cagle (Branch Howe's mother-in-law's sister's husband) and documents UGA around 1917-1918. The UGA photographs include football and baseball games, students in World War I uniforms, buildings and scenes around campus, and student activities.
