Abstract Or Scope:

The collection consists of genealogy, correspondence, writings, financial papers, printed material, photographs, scrapbooks and sheet music. Most of the correspondence is to Lollie Belle Wylie from other writers, including some famous authors such as Samuel L. Clemens, Richard Harding Davis, Harry Stillwell Edwards, Joel Chandler Harris, Joaquin Miller, and Jack London. There are numerous letters from Orth H. Stein and Henry Wellington Wack. Also included are many letters from Lollie Belle to her daughter Hart. There are several letters of Howell Cobb and T.R.R. Cobb to or about Samuel P. Thurmond. The writings are mainly by Lollie Belle Wylie and include a detailed memoir of her life in the city of Atlanta. The financial papers are primarily promissory notes and receipts of the Ellis family. Some of the sheet music in the collection was composed by Lollie Belle Wylie.

The papers of Sam P. Jones includes correspondence mostly from 1863 to 1907; writings, sermons, lectures; and diaries, journals, and notebooks. The correspondence contains mainly letters requesting Reverend Jones to speak and remarks of individuals who had attended a sermon or lecture. The writings, sermons and lectures relate to his work in promoting prohibition. The diaries and journals (1892-1923) were kept mainly by his wife, Laura McElwain Jones, and document her social and daily activities in Cartersville, Georgia.

Alexander H. Stephens family papers, 1797-1977, bulk 1837-1895

Abstract Or Scope:

The collection consists of biographical information, correspondence, writings, financial papers, printed material, photographs, and artifacts. Family letters are mainly among Alexander H. Stephens, his father Andrew Baskins Stephens, his brother Aaron Grier Stephens, his nephew John Alexander Stephens, and his half-brother Linton Stephens. The letters discuss family matters and politics. One group of letters concerns the imprisonment and parole of honor of Alexander H. Stephens at Fort Warren (Boston, Mass.) in 1865. Correspondence between Alexander H. Stephens and various political figures includes Howell Cobb, Abraham Lincoln, Ben Hill, and Robert Toombs. Stephens and Hill write about the possibility of a duel between them because of an argument over politics. There is one letter from Clement Anselm Evans (1833-1911) to his wife, and three letters to him from John Brown Gordon, Joseph Wheeler and James Longstreet. Among the financial papers are deeds, and the wills of Alexander H. Stephens and his grandfather Alexander Stephens (d. 1813). An oversize folder contains a copy of an undated map of Confederate and Federal lines around Petersburg, Virginia. Artifacts include a walking cane of Alexander H. Stephens, locks of his hair, and a bloodletting tool.

The correspondence contains letters between Kytle and her publisher Alfred Knopf, correspondence between Kytle and Willie Mae Wright, and letters from family, friends, and would-be writers.

Harry Scherman family papers, 1893-1972

Abstract Or Scope:

This collection includes correspondence, diaries, and photographs. The correspondence contains letters written by Harry, Louis, and William to their mother and sister while the boys were living at the Jewish Orphanage Home in Atlanta, Georgia. Other correspondence consists of letters between Harry Scherman and Bernardine Kielty both before and after their marriage discussing family news and Sherman's work with the J. Walter Thompson Company selling books and magazines to stores, letters from Rita regarding her writings, and letters written to Rita by the Scherman family. Diaries, written by Rita, detail her stay in England with her grandparents, memoir-style entries regarding her early life, and describing a trip to England. The collection also contains materials relating to "Educational Playthings", an educational toy and furniture company, founded by Rita Scherman Berman.

The collection consists of papers of Peninah W. Thomas and the Thomas family of Athens (Ga.) from 1821-1959. The papers include correspondence, bills and receipts, account books, legal documents, and sermons (1890s) written by Robert Toombs DuBose. The bills and receipts (1821-1910) contain several receipts for wages paid by Peninah W. Thomas to freedmen. The account books (1834-1845) contain bank accounts of Stevens Thomas and lists of accounts and purchases.
