Abstract Or Scope:

The collection consists of papers of the David Crenshaw Barrow Sr. family of Lexington, Oglethorpe County, Georgia from 1817-1915. The papers include mainly correspondence, financial records, and diaries. The earliest records consist mostly of receipts and accounts of David Crenshaw Barrow, Sr. and Middleton Pope. The bulk of the correspondence (1850-1883) is between Barrow and his children David Crenshaw Barrow, Jr.; Ella Patience Barrow (Spalding); James Barrow; Lucy M. Barrow (Cobb); Middleton Pope Barrow; and Thomas A. Barrow. Some of James Barrow's correspondence was written while a cadet at West Point and then later during the Civil War serving first in Cobb's Legion in Virginia and later in the 64th Georgia Infantry Regiment in Florida. There is also an interesting set of correspondence (ca. 1850-1868) to Barrow from overseers (enslavers) at his plantations in Oglethorpe and Decatur Counties, Georgia; letters relating to his investment in a Florida salt works during the Civil War; and letters from John H. Lumpkin and William McKinley regarding the secession of Georgia.

The collection consists of the papers of Cameron Douglas Flanigen from 1867-1941. The bulk of the materials (1897-1924) document Flanigen's activities as a member of the Athens Board of Education and pertain to Athens city schools. These materials include correspondence, financial records, speeches, reports, and writings documenting the conditions of both white and black schools in Athens, teacher and board member salaries, scores of teacher and principal examinations, educational requirements, and teacher appointments.

Erastus Newton Bates papers, 1834-1898

The collection consists of the papers of Erastus Newton Bates from 1834-1898. Includes correspondence to his wife Lucy, pertaining to his Civil War service with the 80th Illinois Volunteers in Kentucky and Tennessee. Bates' letters discuss the battles of Perryville, Kentucky (1862) and Murfreesboro, Tennessee (1862) and his subsequent imprisonment in Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia (1862-1864). Also contains certificates, deeds, commissions, and a few missionary letters from India and Ceylon written by Lucy Bates' brother.

The collection consists of a variety of material inherited by Mary Barnard Nix which dates from 1807-1911. Includes correspondence, land grants, legal documents, Confederate money, a scrapbook, and two notebooks. Many of the land records relate to Mary Poythress and Francis A. Poythress who married Caroline (Carrie) Ware. After the death of Francis Poythress, Carrie marred John Thomas Gay who died in 1865. Of particular interest are Civil War letters by Eugene Ware and John T. Gay, who served in the 4th Georgia Infantry Regiment and T.K. Coleman (unit unknown).

Joseph Mackey Brown papers, 1843-1926

Abstract Or Scope:

The collection consists of personal and business correspondence, legal papers, writings, letterbooks, and other miscellaneous items. The bulk of this material deals with family lawsuits concerning the estates of Joseph E. Brown (father of Joseph M.) and Julius L. Brown (brother of Joseph M.). Box 1 includes letters written by Joseph M. Brown (1909-1926, mainly drafts and typescripts) Theodore Roosevelt, Hoke Smith,S. V. Sanfor, and Thomas Watson. Also in this box are a few of Brown's writings on military history of the Civil War, as well as his views on labor unions. Box 2 consists of legal documents and correspondence to and from other people, including other Brown family members. Boxes 3 and 4 contain letterbooks of Julius L. Brown and cover the periods 1894-1895 and 1908-1910.

Edwards family papers, 1851-1888

Abstract Or Scope:

The collection consists of correspondence, programs and other printed material, receipts, newspaper clippings, and broadsides. The correspondence is mainly business letters to Leroy Summerfield Edwards about his work. Much of the Association of the Army of Northern Virginia correspondence concerns the 1878 yellow fever epidemic in New Orleans and the request for aid by the Regiment of the Orlean Artillery. There are several family letters, some written to Edwards from his parents while he served in the Civil War (12th Virginia Infantry, Co. E), and one written by Edwards while he was a prisoner at Elmira (NY) Prison Camp. The other material in the collection relates to the Association of the Army of Northern Virginia, YMCA, Civil War, Randolph-Macon College, Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity, Piedmont and Arlington Life Insurance Company, and politics.

The collection consists of the literary papers of American writer Harry Crews. These papers document his writing career up through the publication of his twentieth book, An American Family: The Child With the Curious Marking (2006). Typed and holograph manuscripts, correspondence, clippings, conference material, awards, literary and film contracts, financial statements, and photographs make up the bulk of materials, which generally date from the mid-1960s onward.
