Joseph Henry Lumpkin family papers, 1780-1903, bulk 1820-1856

Abstract Or Scope:

The collection consists of the papers of Joseph Henry Lumpkin and the Lumpkin family of Athens, Georgia from 1780-1903. Includes correspondence, bills, a diary, indentures, lands grants, legal documents, and maps. The bulk of the correspondence is to Joseph Henry Lumpkin (1820-1856) discussing politics, the 1840 presidential election, the Wilmont Proviso (dealing with slavery), legal cases, law practice, and Lumpkin's appointments. Major correspondents include John MacPherson Berrien, Howell Cobb, Ebenezer Staines, and Hiram Warner. The diary was written by Mary B. Thomas, a school girl in Forsyth, Georgia, who later married Edwin King Lumpkin. Written from June - August 1873, Thomas describes her friends, school, social and family life.

Some topics include landscape design schools, flower shows, blue star memorial highway markers, and garden therapy.

Abstract Or Scope:

This photograph collection consists of family albums from the early 1880s to the 1890s, containing mostly gelatin type prints. There are also a few ferrotypes. Most of the albums contains pictures of women, men, and children. Two of the albums contain reprints of National Archives negatives taken during the Civil War, including pictures of battle fields and of destruction in Georgia, and one album is a collection of pictures of Civil War generals, including an index for reference.

Edd Winfield Parks collection, 1880s-1970s

Abstract Or Scope:

The Edd Winfield Parks collection consists mainly of Parks' manuscripts, research notes, and correspondence with publishers and universities. While five of his published books are included in the collection, most of the manuscripts are in typescript and range from the 1930s through the 1960s. Some manuscripts are hand-written and show his revisions. Parks' research notes are almost entirely on notecards, though they remain unsorted in the majority of boxes. The final six boxes are processed and organized by magazine. Correspondence with publishers and universities about his work and career exist throughout the collection. The only personal materials in the collection are Parks' World War II service materials and his passport collection. Otherwise, the collection centers around his literary work and the research done for his books.
