The collection consists of a small collection of letters between Brown and B.T. Beauregard, Rufus B. Bullock, Howell Cobb, Jefferson Davis, Andrew Johnson, Alexander H. Stephens, and Henry H. Tucker mainly regarding Georgia politics during the Civil War and Reconstruction. Also contains some material relating to Brown's son, Elijah A. Brown including a 1867 diary he kept while attending the University of Georgia; newspaper clippings pertaining to the death of Joseph E. Brown and his widow; and some legal documents.

John Hall family papers, 1806-1958, bulk 1850-1879

Abstract Or Scope:

The collection consists of correspondence, wills and deeds, and accounts of various family members. There are numerous accounts of the settlement of the John Hall estate, of which James M. Hall was executor. Of special interest are the bills of sale for enslaved people, freedmen contracts, and accounts of plantation overseers [enslavers]. The accounts show the growth of the plantation, including purchase of enslaved people and supplies and land, operation of a sawmill, sales of cotton, and labor dealings with the Georgia Penitentiary after the Civil War. There is also a Civil War letter from John W. Shinholster on April 23, 1863 from his camp near Port Hudson, Louisiana.

Items of interest include a 1784 will of John Kell of Liberty County; a Franklin County jury list of 1836, and Confederate roll of Company K, 10th Georgia Regiment, Kershaw's Division.

The collection consists of accounts and materials related to the threat of a law suits by Harry Tate against his brother, William S. Hutchison. The matter was settled by a mutual release dated December 9, 1913. Most of the letters are to Hutchison, either from Tate or his legal representative, asking for the release to Tate of all "vouchers, accounts, statements, documents and papers," as well as an insurance policy of Tate's which Hutchison held. The accounts show the receipts and sources of income on the part of Harry Tate, including both an Australian tour and an American tour.

The collection consists of papers of Nellie Peters Black from 1875-1920. The collection primarily contains materials relating to Black's involvement in various organizations and in her stock farm. Includes records (1905-1928) relating to Black's position as secretary of the Women's Auxiliary of the Atlanta Archdeaconry of the Episcopal Church; programs (1906-1907, 1909-1911) of the Every Saturday Club (Atlanta, Ga.), a literary society; a scrapbook (1898-1911) containing correspondence, accounts, and newspaper clippings relating to her involvement in the Atlanta Free Kindergarten Association; and a scrapbook (1914-1915) documenting her role in establishing agricultural rallies through the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs. Other materials relating to Black include diaries of a trip to Mexico (1875) and two European tours (1904, 1906); speeches, newspaper clippings, and an extensive collection of photographs of the Peters and Black families.
