1.7 Slides

Scope and content:

The slide collection begins with #2881. This is because the St. Catherines Island slides were numbered consecutively with photographs taken during other archaeological excavations conducted by Dr. David Hurst Thomas. There are gaps in slide numbering representing photographs taken in locations other than St. Catherines Island and are stored at the American Museum of Natural History.

There are 1801 slides that depict human remains discovered on St. Catherines Island. These slides have been labeled in the slides database and are stored at the UGA Laboratory of Archaeology. In some cases, there are slides in the UGA Lab collection that are very similar photos or exact duplicates of the photos in the Hargrett collection. These slides mostly show artifacts in situ where human remains were also excavated, or they depict illustrations of burials (not photographs).
